  • Same here. Pretty obvious change going from Open Pros to Archetypes.

  • What's the word on walker composites? Look like decent price point for full carbon wide clinchers...

  • He referring to feeling the difference between Open Pro and RS31 rather than to a wide rims.

  • I was. However that's more because I assumed the rs31 was a wide rim. I don't really know anything about wheels. Other than that it's now accepted that wide rims give a nicer ride.
So what counts as a wide rim?
And are the elite 24's from superstar components wide/good?

  • 13-15mm is normal width*.

    17mm+ is wide.

The advantage is simply that a 23mm on a wide rims feel closer to a 25mm tyres due to being able to run them at a lower pressure without the tyres feeling squirmy.

    Best combination is running 25mm.

It also advantageous if you have an old road bike whose clearance maxed out at 23mm, tyres sit lower on the wider rims.

    *measured internally).

  • You might just want put half an hour aside and read a few pages of the thread TBH.

  • Best combination is running 25mm.

    orly?

  • @nev

I'd a go with dan's advice of Shimano Rs10 / Rs30 or else go for a hand built set of 32/32h. 105 hubs, ACI spokes, and a sensible rim should be doable for £250.

  • I'm getting that.

Thanks all. I'll do my homework.

  • Campy Shamal Mille
    Mavic R-Sys SLR
    HED Black Ardennes

Which? leaning more toward the Ardennes just because of the wider rim..

  • but R-Sys = SWAG

  • Which? leaning more toward the Ardennes just because of the wider rim..

    Bingo.

    Mavic are old hats.

  • R-Sys spokes must generate an obscene amount of drag.

  • Yup, apparently they're as aero as a brick. Never understood the SLR's. You could have lighter wheels, or more aero wheels, or better breaking, or just get a half-arsed, poor attempt at all 3?

  • I've felt that the continued existence of the R-sys has been due to Mavic's pride preventing them from admitting that they had made a mistake in releasing them in the first place. They are very light, and their Exalith/Keronite/PEO/* coating does look nice and brake well, but spending all that money for literally the least aero wheels made will always be baffling.

As for the Hed Ardennes Black, they look intriguing, but Hed has apparently had a very hard time actually delivering any of them into the hands of consumers.

  • I know a lot of people who own r-sys wheels and like them.

They are money-no-object clinchers for hillclimbs and mountains.

  • or better breaking

Break a spoke and you are in trouble.

The braking is actually very good.

  • I went for Archetypes on miche hubs with sapim spokes 32h in the end.
They're strong (and i'm heavy), and easily repairable. and I got them for £280 new.

  • Quality, durable wheels. Nice one.

In other news... Superstar have started building wheels using the BHS 31mm deep, 24mm wide alloy rims.

  • I would go R-Sys.

    Very nice wheels but spendy.

  • Look great in a shed.

  • You gotta link for those? Ta

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone. I decided against R-Sys in the end, read too much about exploding crabon spokes and drag, not good for such a windy place like Perth.

Found some 2013 Ardennes LT (23mm) laying around at work, pretty stoked as they're the black hub and spoke variety. The black series Ardennes won't be released here for another couple of months, which gives me time to try these over the winter.

  • Perth
