Road Wheels & Road Wheel Recommendations?

  • I know it's only a tenner per wheel, but still curious to know if DT are that much better?

  • Hardly doubt it, spokes are spokes, apart from the bladed one and the like.

  • Ask yourself "What would Scherrit do?"

  • Scherrit would probably build me a 36 spoke touring wheel

  • 36h? what are you riding? a tandem?

  • He built Jaygee 36 spoke excellights - and he still broke a spoke in one! He does have awesome power though... and bad luck with wheels.

  • Cripe! and here's me thinking there's little need for higher spokes count in wheels nowadays.

  • You need more power Ed

  • I'll try and stay under 80kg if that's the case.

  • I am looking into wheelset options for my SSCX build. Want the following;
Disc, decent hubs, possibility of tubeless and I weight 78kg.

OK, so I was on call with strada and they said both Crest and Iron Cross cant be used with high pressure. Which I intend to do at around 90psi with road tyres. They recommend Archetypes (which I already have and I am absolutely impressed with them). But then with Hope hubs (which I originally wanted) it gets too expensive. They have a cheaper option with novatec hubs for £348. I have no experience with these hubs, what they like? As well built as Hope? He also said that you can run Archetypes with a tubeless setup (which I didnt know) so that is a plus. He had similar views on TB14 minus the tubeless compatibility.

  • not as good as Hope, but very good hubs (same as Ambrosio et al) for the price.

I don't think they're any better. Don't they trade on their reputation earned in the past a al Mavic?

A wheelbuilder is gonna suggest the spokes they stock, and up until the recent hike in the prices, DT was the spoke brand most builders had access to in the UK.

I think Sapim still own their own manufacturing and sell spokes in 1mm increments. Both good things.

  • DT Swiss make nice shite.

But everything they make seems to have a brand tax on it. The spokes arent too bad. But stuff like DT rims, and sus forks are priced silly.

You can use it with high pressure, given how wide those rims are, you don't need the pressure to be that high.

I'm running 28c on my Crest with no problem, 75 on rear, 50 on front (78kg), previously 25c with 80psi on rear and 60 on front.

Using a road tire and tube you can inflate to the max pressure listed on the tire.

Do you mean high pressure tubeless or high pressure with an inner tube?

Stans say you can do the latter with crest or iron cross, but not the former. Basically, what Ed said.

  • ^ cheers will look into it.

  • This is what I was getting at - especially given that with the wheel build I'm looking at the Sapim spokes will cost £12.50 and the DT will cost £22.50 per wheel.

At those prices I'd use Sapim! The two are so close that the tiny lead I give to DT is not worth any extra coin. Here in Krautland the Sapim Race are often priced 0.10 EURO above DT Comps---- must have something to do with EURO-SFr versus SFr-GBP currency trends.

  • What's the reasoning behind this?

I think you may have mistaken EdwardZ for a person who does reasoning.

  • DT Swiss make nice shite.

Forget the rims. They are even more foolish than Mavic---- welded, machined blah blah. Can't blame them--- not even Mavic--- for wanting a piece of the market.. even if that means offering technical features that are without merit...

  • Main benefit of CX Rays is not the weight saving.

    You mean the "bling effect"?

(I already addressed fatigue blah blah, the Comps are good 'nuf.. and please don't start to talk about aerodynamics.. leave that to the Freds)

  • Any opinions on pillar, edzed?

  • then I have a very basic question, why not archetypes over crest/iron cross? You know what they are going to be used for

  • Heavier mainly (380g vs. 470g), not as wide and the braking surface is useless when you're running disc.

  • wheelsmith spokes are also very nice if you can find them over here-I have ambrosio excellight/white industries 28h wheels built on them and they're spiffy.
