  • how practical is it to secure at least one bolt each for stem and bar clamp? in terms of practicality and adjusting/fiddling while on the road? just the other week someone looked for a stem and drop bars for his mate's bike. the cockpit got nicked completely. for quill type stems its even just one bolt really.

if you have a threadless setup, purchase a pitlock headset cap.

if you're threaded, a bearing in your stem would work. But I have never done this. Perhaps I should since I have my cockpit dialed in perfectly at this point.

  • i have a bearing in my stem.

  • Hey sorry to pick up on this old post!
2 questions: what size ball bearing would you recommend to securely fit in an allen hole bolt, and what solvent is good for dissolving superglue?

    Thanks in advance, Bradley

  • At work I've used Acetone (found in nail polish remover)to melt superglue and it's worked pretty well.

  • or you can use a superglue remover found in many hardware store/DIY place (if you don't paint your nails)

  • Luckily I can fit a cable lock through my seatpost =P

  • Luckily, I carry scissors and can cut through cable locks...

  • ...you've got scissors to cut though these?

Where do I buy said scissors?

  • Pitlock are frankly stupid for not coming up with something themselves for the seat itself, which is totally unprotected.

Not 100% true. You can bastadize a pitlock to specifically secure Brooks saddles or any other deep saddle: By using the ahead bolt and the rest of the locking apparatus, I secured my swallow titanium to the seat post for the short time [strike]it abused me[/strike] I had it.

That goes round the saddle, frame and wheels?

  • Ultimately, and as you often see around town, if a tealeaf really wants your saddle they will just cut through your seatpost

    Ti seatpost

  • just use cheap saddle + post. total for mine is like £20. doesn't look awful you just don't really notice it.

  • I really wanna max out the security on my bike without making it look like crap but isn't it a bitch to remove the glued bearings if you want to adjust anything on your bike? Or is the acetone/super glue removal working well overall? I guess you would have to have a heat gun otherwise?

  • it's fairly straightforward, don't do anything until you're 100% sure the bicycle position is perfectly fitted for you (not too tall, or too high.

I don't think you need to worry if your saddle isn't that appealing (like a Brooks saddle for instance).

Do you mean **unlike **a Brooks? Anyway people nick anything, it's always an inconvenience.
Re: superglue, it really does melt into a gloop with a bit of nail polish remover. Takes about 5-10 mins including faff.
You can always just stick something in with grease or blu-tac so it looks like it's glued in, and hope a would-be thief wouldn't bother with it.

  • Brooks saddles have left Ed's arse much the worse off in the fight for supremacy. The saddle won.

He was left very sore, and bitter that his arse wasn't strong enough for the job. He's in good company though, Velocio also lost the same battle. Though due to his defeat, Ed now hates Brooks saddles. Sore loser. ;)

This is why I tell people, there's nothing wrong with a bit of prison time. I mean, if Jeffrey Archer can survive it........
