Seatpost Security

  • I have pitlocks on the front wheel but question the point on a seatpost for the following reason:

    Nothing protects the saddle.

In addition to the Pitlock seat post clamp (which is very effective) they make a steel saddle loop which is supposed to protect the saddle as well, but as we know a quick bolt cutter job will go through them.

Is it therefore easiest to just have QR and the just take the saddle with you for any long period?

Also, if you do the superglue ball bearing thing - how do you remove it when YOU want to take the seatpost off?

  • i use superglue and ballbearings, you can get superglue remover from most DIY shops. it breaks it down.

  • there's a inexpensive handy way to secure seats to your frame, if you got a chain tool.
basically get some excess chain (around 70cm) and put it in a inner tube cut to the same length.
(this should look like a basic cable lock)
then loop the cable inside your seat rails and around to your seatstays and back up to your rails, where you can connect em back together with the chaintool.
Finally over lap the innertube so the chain is completely encased by it.

(ED: but yea a bolt cutter will go thru it quite easy >_< )

  • i'm trying to find a way to lock my front wheel on. I use a bold on axle, though, so those locking skewer products do me no good. anyone know of any thing?

  • Smear everything in human shit.

Fox shit is far more pungent and puke inducing in my experience

  • i learned my lesson the hard way. my current security set-up is ballbearings and one of those double-bolted super record seatposts that needs the special kinked tool to adjust the two bolts.

  • Teddy - But your seat itself is still exposed isn't it?

    looks cack

  • Would a star nut bolt work? Because most thieves don't carry torx wrenches, do they?

  • FTW

  • security torx screw head

  • Don't ride with expensive saddles
Don't leave your bike in places it will get fucked over.

How much do you reckon I could hire an illegal immigrant for? I could pay one to watch my bike whenever it's 'out'. In fact, we could all chip in and buy a whole household of illegals and have them roaming London waiting for calls to protect bikes.. frickin genius!

  • security torx screw head

i need to get me one of these! i used to use a ball bearing covered in bike grease, that holds it in there pretty well and its easy to remove with a magnet

  • I noticed for inner tubes the forum did a bulk purchase. What about the same for these Torx screws?

They only seem to be availible in packs of 100:

    @ 1':22" - very bad advice !

The 'don't grease spindles because it will split your crank' myth !

Whatever you do ignore this and do grease your spindles.

But I do, on the whole, like all the 'Makeā„¢' stuff and all the folk who do the videos.

    God bless 'em.

I think they got to the irony before you !

    Prevents it being stoolen

    +1

  • I've just had my saddle stolen, and am now going to go for Zep's method. I've been thinking about all the sorts of prevention methods, and this seems the most inexpensive one, that protects the seatpost and the saddle (providing the length of chain is right). Yes it may look crap, but riding saddle-less isn't good, and bikes are to be ridden.

If i have my doubts about it, i'll go quick-release and take it with me everywhere.

  • bearings & superglue would be more secure. I carry a chaintool in my repair kit and I could crack a chain in, what, 10 seconds..? On the other hand, it would take me 20-30 minutes to remove glue & a bearing from one bolt.

    more security
    more attractive than a chain/tube
    no rattle while your ride
    just as inexpensive
