He is.
He rides fixed.
He's coming to a thread near you.well it's shame he has to show his age and ungrooviness and talk about the aspect of fixed gear noone who truly enjoys it really gives a fuck about.
noone that is except all the old-and-ungroovy people on the forum who constant whine about 'hipsters'..
oops........

in the areas i live, cornwell et kent, fixed has never really been fashionable. infact the only people you see are old guys on geared roadbikes in team lycra, and old guys on MTBs commuting. theres a few exceptions in falmouth becuase its a student town, but even then i only ever saw one guy on fixed.
london on the other hand is completely diffrent, and theyre everywhere. but theres also alot more bling bikes going around london as people are obviosuly more image conscious, and have more disposable income to blow on carbon wheels and risers.
it being fashionable doesnt really effect my life becuase within my areas and social groups, im the weirdo who rides bikes everywhere. i do wish i had more people to ride with though.

Cycling fixed is just walking, but with wheels.
You are Will Self and I claim my free prize.

Did Self write 'Cock and Balls'? There's an appropriate book title right there. If the man is writing in english but provides a dictionary of rarely used, possibly archaic/obscure english words then I'd hazard a guess he's using these words deliberately to show us just how very clever he is. That is the behaviour of a bell end.
On the subject of journo bell ends, Simon Barnes deserves a mention.

I don't think so, even if the erratic grammar and broken semantics are deliberate.
My problem with Will Self is that he doesn't seem to be a novelist, even if he wants to be one; and who'd blame him, it's something any writer secretly aspires to. But his novels never end satisfyingly. They don't really end at all. And if they did, it would still be marred by the way they meander tediously in the middle.
But I like his short stories, his ideas, his cultural commentary on occasions, and his junkie airs and graces at their most inappropriate.
And he has been riding fixed longer than most of the people on here, so he'll be a little further along the anthropological learning curve; certainly moreso than the journalist linked to in the OP, judging by their prose at least.

And there was I thinking that riding a fixed wheel bicycle was the regressive act of a true luddite.....

Heh, you articulated that much better than I could. That was my point - the book of dave was just page after page of dirge. I'm old fashioned, I like plot, beginning, middle and end. And as for the grammar/language thing - it was a poor relation to A Clockwork Orange in that respect in my opinion.

Of course this leaves single speeders in a quagmire.
myehhhhhhhhhhh I am in a quagmire. I was vehemently ss-only up until 3 weeks ago when we put the wheels on the new bike that I didn't realize were fixed/fixed and was kinda forced to switch. I do have a set of freewheel hubs that, were I to really really want built up, I'm pretty sure I could trade the fixed hubset for the build............
......but I think they're gonna go up for sale on here. 8-( I really never expected that. Though I do think at some point I'm gonna have another geared bike.
