I was'nt actually thinking of them specifically. Just that PX had some great deals on, while clearing the old wharehouse.

IMO the best value you'll get is whatever hubs PX have on sale - usually their own-brand ones - normally at £30 a pair. Plus ACI double-butted spokes from Cyclebasket or Outspoken - about £13 for 64, albeit exc. P&P. So, £19. And then a decent sub-£20 rim like the Rigida Flyer, £14 each from Parker. Maybe stretch to Open Sport for few quid more if you fancy treating yourself.
Hubs - £30
Spokes - £19
Rims - £28
Rimtape - £3= £80
and then get someone good to build them for beer. Or £30 from Arup. The spokes, rims and build
(I assume they're machine built)will bemuchbetter than those ones from TFG. It might require a bit of faffing around but I think it would be worth it. -

hmmm, good point about the clearance - havn't got the frame yet (in the post) so not got an answer. these look like a good deal - not that any fucker has them in stock

I'm trying to decide what's best. I have a set of wheels off a Charge Plug Freestyler that I'm considering having rebuilt with DB spokes, keeping the rims/hubs. Is this worth doing? The wheels are 18 months old, the rear started popping spokes last year so, after replacing 4 or 5 in close succession, it's been in retirement for a while.

Yeah, I saw they were listed as handbuilt afterwards, hence the edit.
Quite often, once one spoke goes, they all start going. The hubs will be absolutely fine (unless the bearings are shot) - I think they're usually Formula hubs on Plugs, aren't they? Things might be improved a bit with a lighter pair of rims but even a straight rebuild of the originals with good quality DB spokes would give them a new lease of life. Definitely worth doing IMO.

catfood, what colour are you going for and would you prefer deep rims or shallow rims?
-
• #65
black or silver - not important really - going for a light(ish) build. i have 50mm deepies on my Dronfield, and whilst they may look like the millennium falcon, they weigh about the same, so shallow seems the way forward.

Shallow should be more comfortable too.

tbh, smallfurry has kindly been leading me by the hand through the murky waters of wheel choosing via PM, and you should all name your first born man-child after him/her.
tho all help is appreciated!

Ah, my bad :)
Yeah, They're basically the Dish wheelset, but I'm pretty sure the rims are different. I'm trying to decide if it's worth spending the extra on a wheel set as a pose to rebuilding these. I'm waiting to see if the plug F&F sells along with a few other things, and see how much cash I have after other parts are bought...
I was looking at maybe Mavic Open Sport's, or perhaps Rigida Sputniks... Am I correct in saying Sputniks are pretty sturdy (though heavy)?

I have pretty much the same thing, those with Open Sports. It's a respectably light combo and if they're built well they feel amazing. Good that they've used DT spokes on there as well, that's a solid set of wheels.

Yeah, they're just the same old Formula/ On One/ BLB/ etc hubs. Love them, cheap and running smooth after a year of abuse.

Sputniks weigh about half as much again as Open Sports, but they're touring-width rims - minimum 28C tyres. Very strong though, yes. If you're looking for a narrower box section rim the Rigida Chrina is not at all bad, still a bit heavier than an Open Sport but cheaper - £15.50 each from Parker.

Formula/BLB/Zenith/Ambrosio/System-X have symmetrical cutouts in the flanges, and solid axles - these have cutouts that look like they're "rotating", if you see what I mean, and hollow axles. Not a great deal to choose between them in terms of quality though - like yours, mine have been 100% reliable.
Planet-x had some very well priced wheels, but have sold out at the moment. I'd be tempted to wait untill they get into their new digs, and see what they had then.
