another radial cheese:
In both cases the radial cheesing leads to mushiness and lack of solidity.
i.e. the only cheese that I can currently eat- reading all the other cheese references has made me very hungry, damn you all.

i think they are just a bit pissed of with tits going in and not having a clue about what they are talking about
Everyone has to start somewhere - you also knew fuck all about trendy cycling fads once...
My twopenneth: I have been into BLB 3 times and spent the princely sum of £2 - this was for them to remove a stuck bottom bracket for which my LBS wanted to charge me £12. On the other occasions they have cut and capped some brake cables for me and also tightened my cog and lockring, refitted the wheel and tensioned the chain, all free of charge despite offers of money. So I think they're pretty fucking nice.

'greed. They taped up some bars for me and I was bound to royally rape it myself. No charge.
Sorry about the threadjack.
I like blue cheese with a nice glass of port.

Been to BLB 3 or 4 times, the people in there are always complete bellends.
So I just cycle the extra few miles to Cavendish now, thumbs up for them, always nice and helpful never mind how mundane the question. -

Radial lacing - many hub manufacturers advise against radial lacing because it can distort the hub and therefore damage the bearings etc
Ask any good wheel builder and they will let you know of this.
At the end of the day it is up to you, don't expect to get a warranty honoured.
BLB were correct to advise against radial lacing.
If you still don't like this answer have a wee chat with Clif at Royce.....he will tell you straight.

Quite a few hub manufacturers stipulate that if you lace a wheel radial, you forfeit any warranty

Oh and the final nail in the coffin, I asked how much they would charge to fit and tension a chain. Cos I have a 1/8 chain but no tool, so I was wondering if it would be cheaper to buy a tool or just get them to do it. Guy told me "35 quid, cos that's heavier, that's track chain". WTF? I can buy the cracker from hubjub for like 15 quid?!
Is this normal from BLB? They got some nice frames but really they want to charge 35 to break a chain?! Jokes...
im gonna go out on a limb here and say this is their polite way of telling you to fuck off and rightly so... buy the chain buy the crack and do it yourself its a piece of piss.

Lame or Lovely, which one is it? Make your mind up sonny
I was trying to be sarcastic. I failed? Anyway, I spent 100 quid so I don't think they should be that unhappy to have my custom. Basically I just felt he was trying to mislead me about the chain - I said I was considering buying a breaker and he said it would be cheaper to have it done there, then said it would cost 35 quid. Maybe he didn't understand right and thought I wanted to buy a chain too (but I did clearly say I had one). Even then, it sounds a bit steep.
I also thought the guy was quite rude to the other customer who wanted help with the bars. Whatever, it's really not that interesting, probably not even worth starting a thread over, I was just a bit pissed off.
In retrospect saying "I have a Master's in Engineering" also makes me sound like a twat, but hey I knew what I wanted, so I don't expect them to try and not sell it to me or make out I don't know what I'm doing.
At least we now have a map of the hipster spice route, so some good came out of the initial vitriol.

I know, I've read the horror stories of flanges being ripped to bits and so forth, however with high flange hubs there is enough metal between the holes that it's not that much of a risk IMO. He also said 3x was stronger which isn't strictly true for front wheels, Sheldon goes into loads of detail about it.

I was trying to help you mate; sometimes new members start new threads on topics that have been discussed to death and as a result older members are sometimes less than patient with them.
Ah OK, I was just a bit pissed off with the experience I had and thought I'd start a thread about it. I have to admit I'm not entirely sure it was worth it (?!) but whatever, nm.

See?!? Turned into a fucking awesome thread!!! Radial cheese, pure Prav genius... :D

To be honest, its sounds like you are the 'clueless noob' in this scenario. Asking them to tension your chain for you ?!??!?!?! No wonder they thought you where an idiot, I would have the same reaction, and probably treat you with similar disdain.
Get a clue you clueless nood.
No... I don't own a chain breaker. I have a chain and a rear wheel. I want to break said chain so I can fit said rear wheel. I could just buy a breaker, but if they would do it for cheaper than the cost of said tool, I would say "yes please". Then they said it would cost 35 quid, which seemed like an attempt to rip me off. I did not simply ask them to tension the chain, clearly that can be done by moving the wheel in the dropouts.
Although my English is apparently terrible, I think you mean "thought you were an idiot" rather than "thought you where an idiot".
Where an idiot? I'm right here. Plus to be honest there were plenty of people in there who would not know how to tension a chain, there was also a guy who had come in because he had a flat. What would you say to him if you owned a bike shop then?! "Fuck off noob. HTFU! Plus tell Storm we won't touch his chain, he should just buy a chain tool and shut the fuck up!"
DT Swiss Cheese spokes FTW!
