There is also about £100 of inner tube money coming your way VB. I'll sell the last ones tonight.

Futurama has a joke about this in which the professor shares the news that scientists got bored of that old joke and have renamed uranus to... urectum.
I was tempted to call the server urectum.
Okay, that made me splurt a little tea onto my desk. And I'd just lectured one of our writers about professionalism thanks the-artist-formerly-known-as-VB…
What about a percentage of sales. Needn't be enforcable particularly… just a standard verbal agreement would do it. Sell £50 worth of stuff, donate a fiver. Or summink. Okay, so maybe not. The next person to sell their £5k crabon bea(u/s)tie would then be facing a £50 donation.
Just a thought. A bad one, I'll admit. But at least it was a thought. (My first for the day, as it happens. Which is always a bonus.)

How about only donors can use "HTFU" and "FTW" etc- when a non-donor tries to use such a phrase it is replaced in their post with something else?
-
• #55
let's talk to specialized about sponsorship
-
• #56
Just to be clear... it's basically creating a usergroup for donors, and giving them a set of privileges no-one else would have... such as being able to start threads in the Classifieds forum.
A small revenue stream could be generated from this. Say £2 per year to sell stuff in the classifieds forum. However, there is the problem with people using the forum to flag up stuff like the ebay thread and my bizarrely popular Tricross sale thread.
There are a number of ways to manage the forum but they would demand more time. How would you want to handle that?

A second change I've just done is to install nginx on the database server, and to use that as a reverse proxy cache for this site.
Confused?
OK...
neptune = front end = www.londonfgss.com = dynamic web pages
uranus = back end = database
uranus = back end = static.londonfgss.com = static files like images and javascriptWhich basically means dynamic work is split between the two, as is file access.
This should be the most optimum use of the two servers.

actually looks like you Plagiarist

you are sliming down the front end server so it only caches HTML text and all stagnant images are being server direct from the database.. but this increases the load on the database so surely searches and filters would slow down without static images stored on an edge cache?
or are the images just hosted on the DB server and not indexed/stored as BLOBS?

It was a self portrait.

• #62
can't you cache the images on the CDNs?
in fairness most are links to external sites.. oh besides EDs gallery :) -

True that people..
I think the stickers/shirts/caps/jersey ideas are awesome and should all have profit going to the forum up-keep.. Might be worth asking for a couple of people to take control of each project (phoning t-shirt companies/cap makers/jersey producers, researching prices and setting up a poll about which designs to use) as these sorts of ideas go nowhere fast unless someone takes the responsibility unfortunately..
I basically spend my life buying bike related stuff off the internet, discussing bike related stuff (and cheese) on here, and sometimes I find time to go out and ride bikes (although its really bright out there).
Sounds only logical that the first helps fund the second.

OK, So I think I'm done with configuring the new server and hacking things around. Might tweak a few very small things, but overall I think I'm there.
Please let me know if anything is broken or has gone wrong anywhere, I can't promise that I've done a flawless job because 1) I'm not that good, and 2) I've been stressed as hell today and the server failing under load wasn't something I anticipated having to deal with... so it's been an unplanned adventure.
Hope it's all good for everyone now.

I can't edit posts. When I try to edit any post, all I see is the HTML. No Advanced setting for changes either. Most upsetting. :( :( :(
-
• #67
Hmm... you too.
Try the https:// version of the site temporarily.
-
• #68
Saved!!!!......and in very Tynanesque fashion. Cheers VB, er, Velocio.

I have checked, it's the DNS for the new server. It should successfully flush through tonight. So I'm leaving it broken and will look again in the morning.
-
• #70
You can flush water through your server?
Thats pretty crap eh?
I'll bet its the water that's broken it. I am clearly an I.T. expert.

velocio - if you need any SA help (even just someone to bounce ideas off) please let me know (I'm formerly of Yahoo and Facebook) :-)

Well if you know how to fine tune the settings of Apache2 prefork that would be good.

• #73
Have done in the past- what problem(s) are you seeing?
-
• #74
Slightly strange one- I use the HTTPS version of the site at work, and post server issue I now frequently have no images displaying in posts- and no little broken image picture/red cross to show that the image cannot/will not display.
If it is something that I want to see then I have to load the page in my iPhone, and the image will appear. -
