  • ... whey...

I started out chucking down lots of whey, and I reckon it gave results, but have moved onto other protein sources as whey was a bit tough on my stomach.

Now I am getting this stuff:

Would recommend. If whey for some reason disagrees with you that is. Downsides compared to whey would be slightly higher price and that it doesn't mix quite as well as whey powder.
But if I take the trouble to blend the chocolate variety with soy milk and a banana it is actually really yummy.

  • Slight plug, but i do honestly use it as well. Im not vegan, but cant eat anything dairy, and find it fills the gap.

Hemp protein is great as a recovery drink (before bed after a big ride i find), and its somewhat unique taste isn't that bad if mixed with orange juice, or with cacao powder, soy/milk and a banana as suggested above.

I can also get 10% discount for anyone on here for this, as its my brother's company.

  • I trialled hemp protein a couple of years ago. It remains the most effective protein supplement I've ever used in terms of muscle recovery/lean mass addition.
However, I gave up on it due to the abysmal taste and er…digestive 'issues'.
Like all these things, it affects different people in different ways.

  • Don't listen to DFP btw people, I'm sure he means well but his posts are almost always based on wild assumptions and pointless anecdotes.

There is evidence to suggest that Beta Alanine can assist with endurance training. Athletes who have used it say they have experienced an increased ability to go longer during hard efforts (good for getting over that last 250 in a kilo for example) I've used it myself with no ill effects. Creatine also 'works' but it's main characteristic seems to be helping to retain water around muscles (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). I'm not sure why anyone would want to throw taurine in the mix here though!?

L-glutamine has been said to give a similar effect to creatine, but the evidence hasn't really backed it up. YMMV.

Be careful with mixing supps like creatine and beta alanine, you need to research them really to see if combining them is going to be more negative than positive. They can be quite dependent on being used at the correct time, depending on the individual.

I should have perhaps been a bit more explicit in my post, I've been taking creatine for quite some time, and without a doubt it works. Recovery, finding the energy for that last rep or two, strength etc.

Was interested to hear any thoughts from those who have taken Beta Alanine. Quite a few reports seem to suggest it is more effective when taken alongside creatine, and as they both work in completely different ways, that makes sense. The taurine is included as other reports have suggested that taurine and and b alanine compete for uptake, but which is lessened if both are taken together.

Anyway, it's tingly as fuck and quite a mad feeling at first. :-) Feel dem gainz already bro.

I have. But apart from the tingling, can't really tell you whether it made any difference to my training sessions.

    Looks like a great price.

I had a brief chat with nutritionist friend about hemp today. He rates it highly for training, for it's fatty acids particularly. He recommended the mixes with creatine (and other stuff to help absorption) but the price of those are < £35 a kilo.

What does 0.45g (the daily amount mentioned in your link) look like? Is that a spoon full, or a cup full, or a bowl full? Also how easy is it to incorporate into something that doesn't taste like dirt?

  • I use a tablespoon's worth (pretty sure i measured it out as being .45g a while ago).

I find it works really well with a glass of orange juice, just shaken up in a water bottle. I also add it to porridge (along with cinnamon and loads of raisins) and it doesn't ruin the taste at all.

PETE10 will give people 10% off everything on the Creative Nature website, if anyone is interested.

(They are Surrey based and looking for shops to be stocked in/distributes as well, if anyone knows anyone)

  • Thanks. May or may not go for it... but repped all the same.

after a hard ride i'll sometimes have some SIS protein shit in a banana smoothie to help my puny legs recover

It makes me fart like a trooper though. Is this unavoidable or are there other products out there with less toxic results?

  • Myprotein impact whey isn’t too farty. Sling in some fibre and it’ll make it even less so.

  • Its probably your bodies way of saying eat proper food

  • High purity whey isolate shouldn’t be farty.

  • sure, that's the ideal - but when i get home from a ride i've got a new baby (and his mother) to deal with, i gotta clean the salt off my bike, i have to shower, I have to stretch and I have to clean up behind me.

A supplement to fire into a banana smoothie is super convenient and I can worry about a good meal later.

  • Post-exercise (both aerobic and resistance), chocolate milk has a lot going for it...

  • Love it!

I still use a bit of Torq and I just had some myprotein that's been sat in an office and is 12 months out of date but generally smashing flavoured milk has little in the way of drawbacks.

  • Real food FTW!

A tin of sardines mashed-up with peanut butter and a dash of Encona is proper gear.

  • If I'm racing and jumping straight back into a car to head home, I'll try to have a recovery shake ready, especially if I'm racing the day after but these days I just try and end a ride with a meal so that I eliminate the calories from shakes.
I TT on Torq and ultra race on service station food so can't really comment on Real Food™ :)
