Re. the horsey saga: I know it looks dramatic and intimidating and from what I've been reading and watching last night and this morning (we had a cameraman there - you can see him at the bottom right of the screen) that's exactly the point. It's there to move people the fuck outta the way. If there's a danger of a break in police lines then that 'tactic' if you want to call it that is used to scare the shit out of people and get them to run away giving police a chance to reform the line. Whether or not it's an appropriate or suitable 'tactic' I'm not going to begin to debate, but just for clarity - the idea is not that the mounted officers run people down or indeed make contact with the protesters.
A few of the posts here suggest that it's like some sort of cavalry charge that crush people. It's not.
I avoided much of it yesterday as I was working until about 2am when I bussed home. On the bus there were a bunch of 40 year +, very drunk, very angry, very childish 'protesters'. Let's be clear, these guys weren't mature students. They were just there to get involved in a fight. And fight they did. Starting by ringing the bell and shouting nonsense they turned on shouted at, threatened and intimidated a young couple who were minding their business at the front of the bus. Then one of them tried to pick a fight with a bloke who I can only assume was a professional killer. He was enormous, very calm, very polite, long Leon-esque coat, and tried to defend the couple by firmly but courteously asking them to stop, back off and to tone it down. They phyiscally attacked him - fairly unsuccessfully I might add and ended up with bloody noses and being thrown off the bus as I and a couple of other passengers tried to separate the five or six rowdy twats from this guy and the young couple.
I don't know really the relevance of that last story to the situation re. the horses but perhaps just note it as a reminder to keep an open mind about a difficult situation on the ground faced by both police and legitimate demonstrators when they're surrounded by twats like that whose only intent is to stir things up and be aggressive and loud yet missing the whole reason for protest and demonstration against fee increases (amongst other things).
So fucking what? you're little anecdote brings nothing to the argument. You saw some people who you think were at the protest, a protst of many thousands, and one which you yourself admit to not seeing, and judge the whole event by their later drunken actions? If security guards beat the shit out fo soem festival goers for mouthing off, would you think it was all OK because 6 of those festival goers later turned out to be dicks?
Also Dirty Harry and Whatok, you're fucking idiots, you need to stop soaking in what you are fed in the morning on the TV or by a choice picture in the papers.

People should be pissed off with the idiots who go to these legitimate protests with the sole purpose of causing trouble, completely undermining the legit protest at hand. Some pricks from my uni were trying to do it. I agree with Harry about avoiding trouble, it's really not hard.
Anyway, anyone seen coppers?

^ A lengthy and unnecessary version of what Macready said 15 minutes earlier :)
Yeah, and he may have said it briefly, but he also posted it twice. :)

Is it OK to be angry? Is it justifiable? People are very, very angry, and getting angrier. Are they allowed to? Or should they all try not to be so angry?

cold chips and cold hands... twats, lets kill some people.

I'm just saying that because quite a lot of the press coverage simply fails to take into account what people are feeling.

I'd probably hit someone with a baton if they're screaming 'shame on you' in my face for long enough!

Ooh.... Don't know if that's win or not...
Borderline.
Funny AND tragic.
It would be funny having a car like that, but if you got fired from work and you had to get in that car and drive away with everyone watching through the window, it would really hurt.
Or your wife chucked you out, and you had to drive away in that car, t would be agonising.
Or if you accidentally ran someone over in that car, and got out and tried to give medical assistance, and R2 get blooping and bleeping in the background, then the stress level would be terrible.
I might have though too hard about this...
