A pair of new Danish Endurance 100% merino t-shirts on ebay. Still in their packaging. £88 for a pair on Amazon, but these are being sold by the British Heart Foundation with a starting price of £7.99. I am a vulture, circling. With 11 minutes to go, somebody bids £26.88. He thinks he's being clever, because the 68p means he will beat anyone who bids £26 or £26.50. Nobody else bids...until Gixen puts in my bid with 14 seconds to go. It's 32p higher. I WIN! I bet the loser doesn't even know what sniping is.
I win.

That’s a broad definition of epic.

Epic would be sniping a charity supermarket trolley token for pennies on eBay.

What worked best for me was to put my maximum (what I was willing to pay) bid in, and forget about it until it was over. Let everyone else with their bots faff around raising the price bit by bit then just come back after the auction to see if I'd got lucky and by how much. Or if i'd lost, sod it, it was more than I was willing to pay
Or was I doing it totally wrong? -

Ha, I'll have you know young man...
I was quite a regular about 10 years ago on t'Bay. Had some great wins
Seems now my method would be more welcome in the epic fail thread -

Move with the times. Gixen is for winners.
I used to be addicted to ebay. Always adding to my collection of boots and specialist utilitarian garments. I loved badly written descriptions with information missing or listed in the wrong section. I would ask the seller for more information and word my question in such a way that he couldn't append it to the listing without a rewrite. Often I was the only bidder, or the only one who knew exactly what the item was. Hah! Take that, suckers! -

Why not buy m&s 100% merino wool stuff that is cheaper than that.
Actually do what you want

Theirs are £35 each. I paid £30 for two.

Really, ok I take that back.

With the price of shot and powder these days I wouldn’t be surprised if people started making gunfingers and going ‘bang’.
Or ‘pang’ if they’re of the German persuasion.

Gixen is good. I like the ability to set up a load of bids and if you win one it cancels the rest.

I recently got a 2010 Boston Bruins Winter Classic jersey from Cats Protection ebay shop.
Was £70 but I was the only bidder and it is rarer than hens teeth.
I seem to have a preference for alternative jerseys.

I wouldn’t be surprised if people started making gunfingers and going ‘bang’.
I recall the Irish Army having to do this for its training exercises back in the 80s due to shortages. Which, y'know, could have been fun.

There’s always a nice moment when you’re with a group of people and discussion of spaced comes up and someone puts there hands towards their pockets and goes aaaaarrrrgggggghhhhhhhmmmmmottthhhhhherssfuckkkkjjjerrrrr

No, but the optimal strategy (which is what the sniping bots do) is put your maximum bid in as late as possible (we're talking with seconds to go).
If you put your maximum bid in early there's a greater chance that someone will come along and decide to pay just a bit more for it and you lose out.
If you put your maximum bid in as late as possible there's no time for anyone to react to it (unless they've already entered a higher maximum bid themselves).
As others have said, the other benefit of a good sniping bot is that you can set it up to bid on a group of items and if you're successful with any of the items in a group it won't bid on the rest.
I snagged a PowerTap wheel for my commuting bike with manual patience. I must have bid on 10 or more wheels over the course of months that all went for £200+ until I hit on one that I got for ~£100.

My best eBay win was selling a cycle jacket I'd never worn. Two eejits got into a bidding war and one ended up paying £120. Jacket was available brand new from Endura for £90.

Plus you can put in your amount when it's convenient and just forget it. No need to monitor it or interrupt other activities. Bid when you're asleep or at the pub.
Is this a new one ?
