Sales of New Petrol and diesel cars banned from 2040!
Just heard on R4

This will be implemented by the current regime?

Which will do zilch for climate change, possibly even make it worse, we still have to make the things, and the power cells, and generate electricity. It will only solve some air quality issues, and won't touch water quality. And it won't solve congestion, nor road danger, nor the costs of the infrastructure to use them on and park them. Why can't governments look that far ahead and see that we already invented a bike which solves almost all our urban transport issues. We just don't need moving around in self contained pods.
-
• #14036
Yep - it's a move that generates positive headlines for the government, to let them off the hook for the tougher decisions .
-
• #14037
Well ... it also lifts the lid on a lot of policy and regulation which in turn is an opportunity for a shift and potential reform in tertiary issues like industry practice and transport infrastructure.
I fail to see how this isn't positive.

To add, I'm excited that the concept of "petrol/piston heads" will become increasingly more niche, and subsequently outdated, even antiquated.
A bit like steam train buffs.

I'm definitely with you on that one. I understand driving cars fast being fun, but I'm looking forward to it being confined to private tracks.
It seems crazy to me that cars are sold that are basically designed to drive in a way that is illegal on roads. Especially when we're basically really bad at piloting these things. I cannot wait for cars to be self-driving and electric.I suppose my pessimism is more based on this government and their willingness to do anything that reflects well on them, as long as it doesn't involve actually doing anything.
-
• #14040
You're still allowed horses and steam engines and other old forms of transport on the road. I doubt they'll ban fast cars, they'll just become really niche and really expensive to own over the next 50 years.

Surrey Roads Police Unit:
When you pull over a delivery driver in a HGV, you don't expect to
find over £8000 in cash hidden in the cab (each of those wraps is
£1000). The cash was his savings from his salary as a delivery driver- but it was a job he was doing unlawfully as he had been disqualified from driving. Turns out the driver had managed to get hold of two
driving licences, in two different names. He'd been convicted of drink
driving in one name, while getting his job as a driver using the other
name. Once we unpicked that little conundrum, and he'd been convicted,
the court decided that the money was proceeds of a crime (i.e. driving
while disqualified) and so he had to relinquish the dosh...

They still haven't solved self-drive car / cyclist interaction scenario IIRC

Hal cannot be wrong

I'm sure someone will get there. Also, the standards autonomous drivers are being held to are a lot higher than human drivers. I wouldn't be surprised if cyclist interaction was already better than average human cyclist interaction!

Perhaps by the time we have driverless cars; peds, cyclists and other road detritus will have been persuaded that microchipping themselves is a good idea*, making collision avoidance far easier to manage.
*For supposed convenience / fashion / status.
-
• #14049
Given so many drivers struggle to discern cyclists and some actively target cyclists I can't imagine a driverless car would be worse.
