Just had something happening to me, one of those hard to come by often... so, had my bike locked in Mare street, just next to the Job centre. Had it locked on the job centre bike racks, locked frame and rear wheel with an Abus D-lock, something very quick, nevertheless, safeish (there's normally security on the door of the Job Centre). Took me around 20/25mins to do my shit and leave, only to find my front wheel missing!! Got in straight to the JC and asked the securities if they had seen anything/one.... 'lol, bare jokes, innit!?..', there was of the security guys very helpful, quite frustrated for being there i suppose. He tells me I should go to the Police in Hackney and report it, but 'it's only your front wheel, are you sure you want to arsed about it?', 1sec. later 2 bike cops come out of nowhere, I start shouting as if the building is on fire, the wholetrafficstoppedsortofshouting.
By now it had been no more than 5/6mins since I had arrived to find the wheel gone, the Police was already next to my bike, asking me my date of birth, NIN, etc... whateva, and then SNAP! Sergeant Chris Scott takes a look at my rear wheel and goes something like this: 'Wait a fucking minute, is your front wheel a Gold HHSB (read Velocity) with a white Panaracer, black spokes!??', I go 'ya damn rite it is', he goes 'Shit man, just saw it down the road next to Broadway Market, some geezer was carrying it, struggling to hold both wheel and can of K', 'give me 5min, don't go anywhere, I'll sort this shit out'. I'm all like 'WTF!?' at this point, call my girlfriend saying that my wheel has been nicked, I am disappoint, etc.., when... SNAP!!, Sergeant Chris Scott appears on the horizon, and yes, he had recovered my front wheel. We all had a group hug, I promise to represent some pints and smokes next time, he gave me his card, maybe he wants to be my friend on Facebook, I don't know.
I am not disappoint : D -

shame about Portugal, though.

Ha! Chris is excellent. I've met him a couple of times at Hackney Cyclists' breakfasts. Nice one! I hope you had it recorded as a crime solved?

He asked me to come by the POlice Station and present charges, he said it's a must!
I will. -

eh? I meant about their loss. Trying to keep everything in perspective. karma. etc. In fact, if they had won, you probably wouldn't have got your wheel back.

(glad to hear you got your wheel back, btw)

I saw a bike thief being arrested on the side road between Old St and City Rd. A whole vanfull of Police pinning down some hoodrat and recovering the bike.

Yay! Between this, the bait bikes and the Great Recovered Wheel Story I'm starting to wonder if some reassessment of priorities might be going on within the Met. Long overdue, if so, but VERY much to be applauded.
FWIW, the police are pretty hot on goings on round there - there's a police station just off Pitfield Street and apparently they've been briefed on a small number of persistent dickheads and told in no uncertain terms that they're to get them. Some work colleagues saw a car being broken into of the windows the Last.fm office on Baches Street and called it in - about a minute later many, many police turned up. Didn't get the guy, but major show of willingness.

We are having a big anti-bike theft campaign. I wouldn't call it an 'epic win' just yet but we're talking to the police among other things. Good to see results already happening and let's hope the effort will pay off enough to bring sustained improvements.

Think of all the muders that they are missing as a result though.
