Just wanted to add my thanks to the organisers. Had a fantastic ride despite getting dropped by the fast group on the uphills. Excellent route and superb weather.
Tom and I made it back at 5.30 and I took a slightly roundabout way back home to take my mileage over the 100. -

How long did all the other groups take to get back?
We got back at around 6:45 or so. Had a pint at the Princess afterwards.

I think I made the right decision (not to come) in the end. Virgin ride for new shoes, and wanted to be home by late lunch at the outside, which would've meant smashing it round in 5 hours or so - I had an inkling this wasn't really compatible with the bigger picture.
Ended up doing a quick 40 miles before 11.30am, half of which involved going up Muswell Hill 12 times to 'bed in' the shoes :)
Glad you all had such a nice time, and the rain never transpired.

A great ride! Serious staff!
I struggle quite a lot, I reckon tomorrow will be even worst.
Thanks Oliver for all your encouraging support, and thanks to the Hackney Cycling club with Keir for making this happen.

Yes , thank Kier. I had a great time , even though I left after Matching Green
Oliver, where did we get lost?

Longtime lurker here, finally coming out (so to speak) to say thanks, folks, for a very fine day out, and in particular to Oliver for leading our little group around...

We didn't get massively lost while you were still with us--Dan saved me from some stupid mistakes! I've just been having a look at the Google map again and realised that we missed a right just after Matching Green, where we did take the correct turn into Potash Road but should have taken that right turn almost immediately. That took us way off course, up to the A1060, and it must have been while we were on that longish diversion that the supposedly slow group overtook us by sticking to the route. We then had various other stops, especially the long one in Pleshey, where we caught up with someone who'd been on the Tweed Run and with whom I did a ride in November last year.
We then had two or three other places where I led us a couple of hundred yards off course, in two cases because I didn't follow the signpost even though at that moment I knew perfectly well that it was pointing in the right direction, and one because I'd made a mistake on my hand-written route sheet and put a right turn where it should have been a left turn.

Typical German efficiency.

Some of your stereotypes defeated, then.
The guy with the GPS was an Englishman.
The guy who knew the route up to Matching Green in our group was an Englishman.
The leader of the supposedly 'slow' group who didn't get lost was an Englishman.
English efficiency FTW!

sorry not to have made this after all. needed the zzz's. chatted with clintsmoker about it though and he said it was a really decent ride, with some speedy youths getting the fast group up to a good pace. nice one.
I took in a lone wolf 60-miler into the surrey hills when i eventually did stir from a serious and much needed slumber.
