need more of these
i took this, this morning. first time i have seen it.
The sign of a cyclist with a red line through is misleading and meaningless. It tends to imply that cyclists are always at fault in these crashes. Putting this sign on a lorry lets the driver think that he does not have to take care before turning left. There is a much better sign from TfL which gives a warning to cyclists and it is usually linked to the lorry firm having an education campaign for its drivers. -

the sign is still useful despite what it may imply... if it stops someone undertaking a lorry it's done its job

and the document of course

Hey, that is surprisingly good, coming from ROSPA. It's a shame that the video they made is so crap. The director obviously hadn't read the document. I suspect they re-wrote the document after we criticised the video. -

And if it encourages a belief in lorry drivers that they need not take care to look in their l/hand mirrors because a cyclist shouldn't be there?

i get what you mean bill, but I think road this who safety thing has to involve many different ideas including driving/cyclists recognising potentially dangerous situations. One of those ideas - a good one - are signs on lorries. They shouldn't be dismissed out of hand. That doesn't mean that there are many other - the more the better - ways to may roads safer

sorry, it should read 'this road safety thing'

This is horribly sad.
My thoughts are with her and her kin.I agree with the below:
That bit of road is being dug up, so it's completely screwed.
Terrible news.** It's about time we seriously started talking about banning HGVs from central london between 7am and 7pm**Petition? The evidence is now overwhelming that they are a total nightmare, and we'll just get more and more cyclists on the roads as the weather gets better and cycling is promoted further - and then Crossrail starts with an anticipated 200 HGVs a day removing soil through central London. Blah blah...
Awful, awful, awful... :(
Something's gotta give, this crap's happening way too often... Be really careful out there people...definately x1000000
and
I know that many of these scenarios include unpredicatable, fast moving, metal objects - but forewarned is forearmed. And I'm up for forewarning before these threads become a daily ocurrence.
The cycling 'school' is a great idea, but it's still just not enough.
London traffic is brutal, and often, unnecessarily so. -

oh goodness me . I am so sad .
I passed where it happened not too long after and i was so upset by what i saw. Ive spent the last 5 years riding that route twice a day on the way to work. In addition, living beside the Olympic site means i have daily encounters with those horrific London Concrete lorries, in fact i just had to ride home tailing one which made me really emotional.
Right now im not sure what we should do but please know that you all can count me in for being involved in raising awareness whatever we decide.
My thoughts are with her family & friends . Ride safe everyone x

I think the cyclist and lorry factsheet is a step in the right direction for educating people no matter what. and i think i am a fairly decent cyclist and have still had some near misses, though not for the same circumstances. i always take the back streets as much as i can, especially on that stretch.
Remember those "THINK!" ads on telly? why isn't there one about undertaking lorry yet?

terrible terrible news
my thoughts go out to the family
these threads leave me cold to the core

It's not a bad juntion, the problem is you get stuck behind a load of nodder on the left, I usually ride down the centre from old st roundabout, sometimes in the bus lane, but as soon as I pass the lights at Central St I ride the line down to the junction. Ed's right, needs to be a THINK ad, or a mass awareness to the danger on the left.

So sad, feel terrible for all those involved.

• #169
:( absolutely tragic...

Condolences. How about a media friendly mandatory forum ride to deliver some kind of petition for safer cycling re: HGV's. I've got a few mates at papers and such, could maybe rope in some minor celebs.
-
• #171
You can cut the left turn out quite easily there - plenty of back routes which will avoid that junction.

• #172
Very sobering news. RIP.
