I do work on Mac's and so I am biased, having everything synced across 2 laptops, a G5 desktop and my iPhone is invaluable.
All these new phones, BBerry Storm and HTC just seem to be copies of the iPhone, but whatever works for people. I'm not one to judge, I just know what works. :)

Crispin, go check out the 3.0 updates presentation. It's a bit long but it'll rock your socks off.

Watched it a couple of weeks back, two standout features for me are picture messaging and rotating keyboard when texting dancing banana

Android, BlackBerry OS 4.7, Symbian S60 5th edition and Windows Mobile all have both of these things! ;)
i'm not saying that iPhones aren't good (they quite obviously are), but they're not the be-all and end-all of mobile OSes. and i am an apple user, too.
Seriously though, Android is fucking good. I think the user experience is now as good as an iPhone and it doesn't force you to use iTunes, it's open to apps that Apple will block, and it's all built around the web (so syncing your data is seamless across any computer that has a browser on it).
Google is evil though.

Which is strange given their professed strategy.

Similar maybe to the US army- "Peace is our Profession"?

The two things I mentioned are frankly inexplicable omissions from 2.0

badtmy, where the hell did you get a Magic from?

Vodafone lent me one for a few days.

I can't wait to get mine. It's coming out on the 5th, isn't it?
The killer app for me was the GPS+GMaps. Can you import bikely routes into the Mobile GMaps? Is there a good ride app like iMapMyRide?
Also, I love the fact that it is all written in Java and I don't have to learn yet another language if I want to write an app myself.

yes i think the Magic pre-orders are shipping on the 5th, but they' might be in shops on friday, so have a look in your local vodafone emporium if you haven't ordered one. you can get a £5/month discount for online pre-orders though, if you're quick.
i actually didn't have a chance to try importing a bikely map, sorry, and I didn't get a chance to run through all the apps so I don't know about iMapMyRide or equivalent. I did download an app that tracked running/cycling, but it seemed to be broken (prolly some API changes in 1.5 made it unstable). the Gmaps implementation is excellent though.
Android's application environment is java-like, yes. They made their own Dalvik virtual machine to run applications in, which is based on javascript but kindof reverse engineered and tweaked a bit. so if you've been writing mobile java apps there will still be some adjusting, but nowhere near as much as learning to write iPhone apps (although I'm not a developer so i could be a bit hazy on the details).

Do I get the discount for the 18 months contract too? Don't seem to be able to.
Ideally, I would like to get PAYG as I hardly ever call or text and I don't mind paying upfront. Have you got any info on this? Sorry for treating you like a Vodafone rep.

dunno, i don't work for vodafone.
i would prefer PAYG as well, but i think it's contract-only at this stage.

Totally agree, but it's nice to see them still thinking, and listening to their customers.
Spotlight is good too. And copy/paste is long overdue, but it looks like they have developed it really well. -

Pretty good reviews of htc touch diamond 2 on coolsmartphone.com. it looks a lot faster than the original number.

I had a Windows Mobile based smart phone from HTC before and hated the windows aspect.
Now that they provide a UI to cloak the base system they may be a lot better.
With my old one every task saw you getting the dibber out...

i knew this ragamuffin kid when I was a yoot who carried one of those, pimped out 80s drug dealer style. Only it didn't work. It was his cosh.

i really like my iphone, but the battery is a bit shit and i wish google maps was a bit smoother loading. other than that its pretty much brilliant. having any apps running for a while kills the battery.

Skully, I work in the mobile phone industry so can't really accept the luddite label. The phone I posted was my first ever mobile phone that I keep in my desk to remind people what they used to be like.

There is this (also works on other GPS enabled phones).
Not sure about importing bikely routes - I'll give it a go.
I'm no fanboy, but the iPhone is the most amazing piece of electronic technology I've ever used.
