  • Scoot and I watched it. It was good, I was only partly aware of our muddled history in the area before. I particularly liked the footage he used.

  • ^ sample a go go, see how many you can spot in there............

I'll just leave this here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1bX3F7uTrg
    :)

  • excellent film , loved the cut up footage interspersed with carry on up the khyber ....the soundtrack is dope too . afghan - saud - USA - UK -what a disgusting mess ......most of the footage was leftovers from bbc news editing i believe ?

  • It makes me think of David Lynch re-doing Dune in a documentary /found footage style. It already feels like Dune. Probably because of the Saudi backstory basically mirroring Paul Atreides' rise to power...

  • Lots of his films can be found on here.

  • Should have checked it was almost 3 hours long before watching it at midnight...

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p04b183c/adam-curtis-hypernormalisation

  • Can't wait til I can find the time to watch that. Could be months. Or years.

  • I wonder how many of us bothered to watch this?! The only fly in the ointment is that it isn't 3hours long.

'And Thabo Mbeke was swept to power'

  • Seriously people watch The Loving Trap^^ up there, it's amayyyyzing

  • He was on Jarvis's Sunday service on 6 music and played some bloody good music. Looking forward to seeing the new film.

  • His music choice is all ways great, tho he does seem to have his "go to" pieces.

There's a sample of Hypernormalisation here.

  • Watching it now... Great so far...

  • I've not watched Hypernormalisation yet, but I did spend three hours listening to Burial with my head in my hands.... Do I still need to bother?

  • Do it again, except this time alternative between looking at a photo of a dead guy surrounded by blood and a night time photo of Wall Street while listening to Burial.

  • My favourite film maker. I only once doubted his sanity when hyper normalisation started on ufo's which were then explained and bought right back into context. Another bonkers film that'll totally fuck with your zen.

  • It wasn't a total rehash of his previous films but still interesting to watch, a not-so-quick treatise on how we got to where we are now...

The most interesting thing for me is the scoffing... People who moan about the state of the world on FB while they're in very well paid media/finance jobs... Myself included...

Nail on head, we're all doomed..

  • PS I'm not in a well paid media job anymore...

  • I thought the points about faking things in Hypernormalization could be made quicker...

But as a movie to learn about the mess in the ME or if you're new to Curtis and are patient it's definitely worth a watch (or a listen while doing boring Excel work at work... )

I'm not sure what to do about the "state of the world". I am beginning to think more and more though that Nato isn't exactly a force for good as it keeps the existing balance of power, no matter who it has to screw over.

  • I skim read a good article on one of the topics from Hypernormalisation, about internet echo chambers and the power of "if you like that then you will like this" algorithms, but I can't find it again to read it properly.

  • I've been thinking for a while now that I need to give something back, have no idea what I'm gonna do but I wanna make a difference, no matter how small... I am a massive bleeding heart liberal tho', no surprise there...

Also very inspired by a couple of people out here in Brisbane who give an awful lot just to build a community and they do it just for the hell of it, it's fun to hang out with folks after all!

Time to build bridges in the real world... #hippy

  • Was that Surkov sitting next to Putin yesterday? AFAIK he got the sack at some point, but I guess his current 'advisor' entitles him sit with the big boys and girls.
