I used to use 71" (46x17) but I wasn't spinning fast enough so I've dropped down to 69" (46x18) to force me to get more supple.
Richmond Park is fine on these gears. 76" and I could feel it in my knees. I did most of last year's Audaxes on 71" (including a full SR series, so rides up to and including 600km). 67" this year as I'm doing hillier rides.

I am riding 90.1" around London (48/14) - 88" is for small woman and the elderly.
But you ride slower than small elderly women :)

Which small woman are you referring to? Is it that Apollonia from Purple Rain?

After riding the plastic fantastic geared toy all summer I finally went for a reasonable ride on the 'ole Steamroller this afternoon. Probably covered about 25 or so miles with no problems but never really spun out so am going to try a lower gear. Current set up is 48:18 so I've ordered a 19t sprocket. Like the OP I feel I should be loving my ageing knees.

Works for me too... just dropping from 48x18 to 46x18 really sorted out a nagging knee pain last winter. A gear ratio much above mid 70's would have me grinding to a halt around much of my Surrey hill rides... but then I do wear (very expensive) women's underwear.

Gear ratio of the spods.

Although apparently putting 28C tyres on adds another 1.2GI to to it, so I guess this will change when I changed tyres....so I may no longer be god like anymore :(

Probably a wise idea if only over the winter months.
Try 48: 19 for a while - cogs are cheap and you can always go back up
