Apparenty in Copenhagen, they rigged up a big HGV and parked it on City Hall Square in association with a conference about heavy traffic, to show cyclist about the blind spot of the HGV.
translation; "Hi Cyclist! Try out a truck and see yourself from a new angle!"methinks london should have those.
Good Idea. It's nice to know they even think well enough of their cyclists to do that.
I go by the rule "if you can see their eyes, their eyes can see you." In the mirror or otherwise.

The Met Police did do that in London: http://www.lcc.org.uk/index.asp?PageID=1265

about two months ago in outside the fire station in Dalston

must've missed that, it would make a difference if it were monthly at a prime location somewhere right in the central.

It was in Richmond Park one Saturday morning a few months ago. I didn't sit in it, but lots did.

there's even a thread somewhere on it.

It's happened all around London in many separate events. Just another prevention initiative.

Good idea, though as Schick says similar things have happened in London. Main thing is, stay out of blindspots!!! This makes it look a bit like you only need to worry about huge HGVs, but even a van ain't gonna see you if you whizz down the inside... let's all be careful :)

Especially if the driver isn't looking in the mirror, or has even removed it.
"But an inquest into her death at St Pancras Coroner's Court on Monday heard that a week before the accident, the mirror that would have alerted the driver to Ms Pontecorvo's presence had been removed."

This is well worth a re-post.
Blind spots explained by a lorry driver
But remember that you can't assume that just because they should be able to see you, they will. Numerous cases of drivers who would have seen, didn't look.

to assume...

I had a go in Richmond Park a couple of months ago. Was very shocking how bad the visibility was.
Definitely reinforced the idea of not under taking high sided vehicles. Something you see people doing all the time in London.

It does beg the question why vehicles with such appalling blind spots are even allowed on city streets, mind.
-
• #16
Well, yeah. Ever wondered what a 'banksman' is?
-
• #17
this solution orginally (when attached to traffic lights) tired to solve the blind spot + the driver attention issue.

A "Banksman" is a drivers assistant who is supposed to check blindspots before the driver moves the vehicle.
Only found, these days, on very very big loads which have rear wheel independent steering.Toodle pip

Its all the same shit arguements over and over again...

Quite. Where's the man with the red flag, too?

Thanks, Bill, I hadn't seen this yet. Really tragic. It partly explains what was a very odd incident, horrible as it was.

Yes, this is very good. Perhaps we should have an 'essential links' thread somewhere that need re-posting all the time. This would be right up there.

They had this in the city a while ago. I sat in one to get my rlj fine revoked.
It did nothing to change my habits since I avoid passing the fckers anyway. -

Yes, it would be good if it were made a sticky.
I'll start a thread in the 'General' section for 'essential links'. Let's see how it develops and whether it'll prove worthy of being a sticky in due course (i.e., hopefully it won't get derailed (too much)).
