Lewisham college, unmarked police car, dogs. I don't think it was to do with them being cyclists.

To be fair I thought that the RLJ was not the cause of the arrest- the Passat was clearly looking for them.
I was just surprised to see the dog leaping out of the car with the coppers.

I imagine that outrunning a furious dog over a short distance would be tricky.
You imagine wrong then,
i say bring it on. -

Fair enough, I think that a re-run of the drag sprints with rabbits attached to belts, and some excited dogs would be a great spectacle.

It probably wasn't given a choice. ;)

I was driving to Tesco today (yes I know, but you try getting a 5 kilo bag of cat food, 20 toilet rolls and some dinner in a courier bag)
so funny.. Dammit and the non-bike-based shopping experience FTW!

That is not nearly enough shopping to warrant use of a car. I rode back with 15kg of cat litter, 8kg of cat food and two bags' worth of food shopping the other day.
htfu!

20 toilet rolls? Is it buy in bulk and save day or do you just have a really incontinent cat?

You imagine wrong then,
i say bring it on.This I would love to see! Any trained police dog, any PP dog, any dog trained in schutzhund, any dog trained in French ring - fuck it, any mutt I've owned - sent on a retrieve would not only catch you before you had a chance to shit yourself, but would also ensure you didn't cycle comfortably for the following few weeks.....;)

A typical dog, i.e not one bred for racing will be able to notch up 30+ mph. The problem with outrunning one is not your top speed but your rate of acceleration. Like any mammal, dogs can attain near their top speed in a relatively short space of time. Relative to you that is.
Luckily for us, dogs can't draft. Once you're ahead, keep going and don't turn any corners.

I was driving to Tesco today (yes I know, but you try getting a 5 kilo bag of cat food, 20 toilet rolls and some dinner in a courier bag) along Deptford Church street.
About half way down toward Lewisham is a roundabout.
I stopped to let a blue Passat estate go around, very slowly, then pulled in behind it.
It made a very sudden left turn into Lewisham college, and I accelerated away toward the lights.
Whilst waiting at the lights I saw two of the local youths on bikes blow through the red, wait for the opposite lane to clear of traffic, then cross. I didn't really think anything of it.
Lights went green, I carried on. Suddenly sirens behind me.
I pulled over, the same blue Passat flew past me, then braked savagely and slewed to a stop.
All four doors sprang open to reveal plain clothes police, one of whom was holding a very very excited German Shepherd by the collar.
They were arresting the two youths on bikes.
Are police dogs the new way to stop bicycle mounted villains?
