Prefer Powerblocks to DTH if you're not going off road too much

  • Cheers, i looked at the Maxxis but have no idea how well they last against normal punctures. Hadn't seen the powerblock, I'd be using them with normal tubes but might give them a try, just usual round town cycling so probably 99% on road.

  • I've just ordered the Continental doublefighter III, looks pretty good and has a matching 26" for the rear.

  • Fwiw I use a very lightweight bmx tyre with a fairly thin casing. I've ridden it over load3d quite a few times. 1 puncture in about 3 years. But then I think punctures are mostly down to bad luck, I've had a Marathon Plus puncture in its first mile before 🤷🏾‍♀️

  • Oh I've got a pair of these in 24", nice tread pattern

  • Me and my daughter have got 1500 miles under our belts with this set up. it’s a modified Halfords trailer cargo strapped to the full cargo deck, it rides great and still has space for nursery bag and shopping etc.

    ha

  • Picked this up this week and went straight out and bought an old folks chair. 12 miles back home was a breeze. Wonder if I'll ever use my other bikes again...

  • And you got the one with wide tyres.. Looks good!

  • Skinny tires would have been hairy with that load I think. A bit slow rolling but happy with the bouncy bounce.

  • omfg I soooo want an axe carrier now

  • Holy shit you're on here! Been following you for a while some. You've got a hell of a creative mind on you.
Loving the flip platform. You doing any sorta commission for old frames or summat?

  • How to convince a non-cycling wife / husband that cycling with their precious offspring on the roads is safe? Feeling hopeless for the future of utility cycling in the UK.

Until is see as safe for the majority of people it's just a non-starter.

  • I tend to go in circles with this. I convince her its fine.... then have to ask her to drive me to a&e every 18months or so.... cycling is safe...honest

  • The risk profile of cargo bike riding with kid is totally different to a road ride or gravel ride, I'd say.

  • not sure you can. only way you can is by taking offspring out onto the roads and making it a natural daily occurrence, this is how we travel. Hopefully if enough parents do this, the visbility of it makes it more acceptable for other parents to do it.
I'd be more worried about the cost of it myself, and the infrastructure to support people continuing to use cargo bikes

  • Well it was the cost that got us talking. Looking at electric cars and doing spreadsheets investigate the cost. Looks like owning a cheap car outright, even tax, fuel and maintenance is around 20k for the next 6 years.

  • when it comes tom comparing cars with bike, its not even worth doing ANY calculations, cars are always expensive even if you get the highest spec'd electric cargo bike with Rohloff etc. Cars NEVER make sense for any journeys below 10 miles but I dont think corny was comparing it to cars (does corny even have a car?)

@mi7rennie I installed a Bafang motor on my bullitt yesterday for child carrying; working really well and will keep posted how it works in future :) just in terms of the motor behaviour its very much similar to Bosch Performance Line CX I have on other bike

  • @amey @mi7rennie
we used to have a car, was stolen just before lockdown. We'll probably get another car before we get a cargo bike (journeys out of london/edge of london to see friends/family)

Wasn't comparing buying/owning a cargo bike to owning a car, more the mindset of the majority of the population who don't want to spend £200+ on a bike, let alone £2k+ on a cargo bike.

Reason's we don't have a cargo bike now is no space to store it (this may change if we buy a house) and the upfront cost of it (the extension of the cycle 2 work scheme to include e-bikes hopefully means we could get one through that, to make it cheaper and a longer term outlay)

  • The risk profile of cargo bike riding with kid is totally different to a road ride or gravel ride, I'd say.

    This * 100.

-On a road bike in bike gear, I'm a target. A certain demographic of drivers has it in their head that they have to do something as they drive past, be it a deliberate shitty cut up, a fly by, yell something etc.
-On a mountain bike in the same bike gear as above, I'm less of a target. Can't explain this one. I guess they see the bigger bike and assume I'm bigger?
-On a cargo bike in the same bike gear as above, I'm almost no target. It's a big unit rolling down the road and 99% of people give you a way wider berth than normal. The only people who give you grief are the sort of people who have to mock out loud on things they see that are out of the ordinary. With a child seat on it, you get more space. The sorts of people who are going to do it anyway, start their shitty manoeuvre but spot the child seat and 99% of the time back out of it. The spineless cunts.
-Child seat on road bike is ok but some people have a bee in their bonnet about it and feel like they have to do something when they pass. Child seat on mtb is better. Again, don't know why.

  • I have had shockingly cuntish driving around me when on cargo with a 'baby on board' sign.

Depends on the city but most drivers are just cunts.

  • My kids are 4 and 6, I live in a relatively rural part of Scotland. Last weekend was the 6 year olds first time riding on the road with me on the tandem with the 4 year old and my wife on her bike.

There was a notable change in drivers behaviour, 99% being very cautious.

It still seems like 1% are going to be over aggressive regardless of the type of bike.

That 1% are the main reason my wife won't entertain the idea of riding on the roads regularly.

  • That 1% are the main reason my wife won't entertain the idea of riding on the roads regularly.

I dont blame her, I cycle a lot and I still have the same anxieties.

  • I also mean that you will adjust your riding accordingly. With kid in front I ride very very differently and select completely different routes.
