Being threatened with an angle grinder has happened before, very very frightening. For that alone, whoever it was deserves to be taken out of circulation.

  • @MCamb I have a rohloff question; if a frame/bike takes 10x135mm enviolo hub and I want to 'upgrade' it to analogue rohloff (not E14) will this do?

    Context: Looking at Cube Cargo Hybrid and the Enviolo version is £200 cheaper than Deore 1 x 10. I was just going to get Deore and upgrade to Linkglide when cassette and chain wears out but then the £200 diff and that Merlin wheel+shifter combo is tempting.

  • What made you think about switching to the cube? Versus another longtail?

  • Cheapness, dont want to spend more than the price of that Cube £3.5k. Insurance will be cheaper too.

    Plus I think a long john would have been slightly harder to steal in the situation it was locked in.

    Long tail was mainly bought so me and my partner could share it but we have just decided that I will use the bike. She is open to the idea of using Cube but not ever ridden a long john bike.

  • really would need to take a good look at the dropouts on cube, take measurements and refer to Rohloff manual. But it does look like it might work. With the axle plate already fitted to Merlin deal.

    Guess it supports the double gear cable routing on the DS (enviolo) but will it support it on the NDS too (Rohloff). There are workarounds but might look a bit messy.

  • Makes sense, have been looking at them used as prices have massively dropped it seems. (On the fence versus upgrading longtail)

  • Based on the picture of the dropout MCamp showed above, you will not be able to use a monkeybone to fix the oem adapter plate.

    I think you need the standard plate, a torque arm and the external mech version with disc brake.

  • The way I’m looking at it If the dropout is long enough You won’t need a monkey bone adapter, as the OEM axle plate provided with the Merlin wheel is to be used without one (with post mount brakes). Dropout just needs to be long enough to support the axle plate which replaces the torque arm. (And looks like it might be)

    Looking at the cube it looks like it has sliding dropouts so this is how chain tension is achieved.

    I’m not 100% though and manual will need to be referenced with some more detailed knowledge of cube dropouts

    Which has detailed drawing of the dropouts. It also looks like they ship the same dropouts for enviolo and the deore build.

    @MCamb so you are saying if I get the Merlin deal I'd need a diff axle plate right?

    Cable management could be tricky yes but I think I can live with that, cables run on the steerer tube and exit at the bottom I think.

  • I’m thinking the OEM axle plate that Merlin is supplying might be ok for use with cube. So no new axle plate needed. See urban arrow rear dropout arrangement with Rohloff:

    solid axle, OEM axle plate , post mount disc brakes, long vertical dropout. No torque arms, speed bones etc needed.

    The dropout needs to be long and stout enough though on cube for this to be the case. With wheel fully sat in, that support block on OEM axle plate replaces the need for any additional torque bracing.

    Cube specs need to be double checked against Rohloff manual (which is quite comprehensive) to be sure.

  • I didn’t but I do have a side on photo which might help.

    The hub is the same setup as the one supplied by Merlin (OEM axle plate, solid axle).

    There are no speed bones or anything required -the post mount disc brake mounts to rocker dropout, torque is anchored via that little support plate you see at the bottom of the drop which is part of OEM axle plate.

    Arrangement looks similar to cube dropout, except for UA rocker / cube sliding for chain tension adjustment.

  • Ah nice! I realised I had a an OEM2 plate on the E14 on the Tern, where as the UA one you posted looks like OEM plate

    I think the diff is OEM2 plate is for QR and OEM plate is for threaded axle

    Is the position of cable box(?) decided by the way it sits in the axle or you can have it wherever you like?

  • OEM and OEM 2 both come in QR and threaded axle formats.

    Position of cable box is however you like dependent on frame clearance and cable routing. Quite important to use a torque wrench on those (5 /6?) screws securing the axle plate to hub if you move it. Always check them on ‘new’ hubs too.

    Side note /tmi-
    I’d always use box fresh axle plate screws if I ever took them off, but those bikes I was working on got absolutely hammered by people and couldn’t always check them frequently. If you move it more than once though consider getting some new ones, the thread lock they come with deteriorates after a couple of loosening / tightening cycles. And Rohloff advised against applying thread lock yourself in case excess gets into inner workings.

  • Better late than never finally got around to installing swytch kit on my wife’s analog bullitt. Hopefully will finish adapting urban arrow rain tent (lots of cutting and some sewing)

  • Possibly looking for potential longtail in the near future for my partner and me to share, for 1 kid hauling and a bit of shopping + day trips. There's a 6" height difference between us, but she probably prefers a more sit-up-and-beg position which compounds things a little.

    Obviously the Tern HSD appeals with the Andros stem thingy, but are there any others I should be looking at? Is that Height difference even worth worrying about? Was looking at RadWagon previously but I believe they've stopped selling in the UK.

    Bafang conversion of something, or even 2 of them, might be the other option. The low CoG on the Terns also appeal as I think my partner might struggle with a chunky toddler up high on a normal child seat.

  • Anyone ever seen a drop bar Omnium mini (the smallest one)?
