Schwalbe Durano for 10£ -
• #53
Not the same Durano as emmet was recommending... The different sizes appear to have wildly differing reviews.

Anyone tried the Marathon Racer Raceguard? Only 260g for a 35c...
-
• #55
Get folding. Fair weight in the wire.
I'm running marathon racers. They're good.
Folding ones. -
• #56
Don't sacrifice too much weight in tyres if it means not enough puncture protection.
Can save weight elsewhere. Like Ti spokes or summat... -
• #57
Todd's nipples are titanium.
Yeh any tyre with a wire bead is going to weigh like a bastard.
Always be folding, easier to carry also, cos they fold.
-
• #58
Like Ti spokes or summat...
Hmm...
Edit - Google seems to say they have more flex than steel. Shame, the blue ones would have been perfect.
-
• #59
If you want to be really stupid, you should go for alu nipples.
-
• #60
Has anyone actually used Ti spokes in Polo?
-
• #61
Seems like it would be a lot of extra money for very little benefit.
-
• #62
Yeah, just saw the price. Wow.
-
• #63
So what spokes do people recommend? My focus is on weight and strength, currently I have Sapin Strongs, but they are 6.72g per spoke.
-
• #64
Sapim promote the CX-Rays as having the best strength-weight ratio but they're at least £1.30 a spoke.

I've never had one of the dt competition break on me since I got my wheels built, had a few bend a bit and there was a while when there wasn't nearly enough tension in the wheel but they held up fine
-
• #66
I think DT competition is pretty much the same as Sapim Race. 2.0-1.8-2.0 round butting.
-
• #67
Yeah

Does anyone know of a spoke pattern simulator?
I'm trying to work out what pattern is going to give the smallest holes on 26" 36h. On my current 700 48h 4x wheels, there is a big diagonal hole where the ball can go through.

http://www.rockx.net/cfw/cruisinn/spd10.htm pops up after a quick google. Might play with it now myself. I thought it was 3x but only based on vague memories of something snoops wrote.
-
• #70
Talk to Snoops, he tried to do a similar thing. Radial has the smallest gaps so we assumed 1x would then have the next smallest gaps, etc.
However, I think it didn't quite work out that way as it's the shape of the gaps (and not the area of the gaps) that really matters..?
Also: wheel covers.

Thanks Rob.

Playing with that web app leads me to think that the lacing pattern has no bearing on the gaps in your wheel, it's all much-of-a-muchness once you get to the parallel spokes heading to the rim (the outer third of your wheel near the rim). The only way to make a difference would be to go radial (where spokes work individually and not as parallel pairs) I reckon?
But yeah generally, the fewer crosses the better (as the spokes are more spread out), offset lacing might work, but I'd go with standard 3x and put a small wheel cover on the outer third for the best of every world?

Wheel covers make so much sense... My rear disk failed so I played without it... One poxy game and broke two spokes, months and months of trouble-free polo before that...
-
• #75
I do realise they aren't cool tho'...
I reckon thats why it took me so long to stop.
