What spokes are people using these days?
-
• #228
Sapim race, Sapim Strong, DT alpine 3
Depends what size holes your hubs have.

What spokes are people using these days?
This question took me straight back to that day at Downham. :)

Ha!
Sweet memories of trashing my own bike at Downham, them were the days .......

Got my new wheels built by Mike at PUSH but want to get some new wheelcovers before I use them.
I've seen a few people with clear plastic covers, anyone got a link? -
• #232
They are from Staples IIRC correctly.
-
• #233
So just plastic sheets, nothing pre-cut?
-
• #234
Paperchase plastic sheet. Easy to cut with scissors

I was looking at these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2mm-Clear-Acrylic-Perspex-Plastic-Sheet-Disc-500mm-Diameter-/320831701911?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4ab30f4397
Might be too brittle?

Anyone know if anyone still has stock of the 26' khe mac2 park tyres? I'm after the lightest front tyre going (skinnier the better). Ive just changed my front to a tank of a wheel from a featherlight wheel, dont wanna change it as this thing is bulletproof, but it did feel a lot better with the old wheel.

What rear spacing do you need Andy? You can get good deals on 26inch wheels from on one, just put a singlespeed cog and cassette spacers on.

My Halo Spin Doctor arrived this morning. Going to link it up to the SAS rim which is currently on the front. The front wheel will then be The ACS high flange hub to the Rigida rim I found of SJS for silly cheap - http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rigida-26-x-175-26-inch-559-atb-alloy-rim-48-hole-prod6739/
Thinking of going for DT Alpine III spokes from Rose but that's £40 for spokes + £7 for postage for 2x 48h wheels

Thinking about getting a new set (or at least front) built for the bruiser (700c, v brakes).
Going to try using either mesh or a thin "band" cover around the middle of each wheel (like Jono's I think), mainly to stop balls/mallets getting stuck.
I'm thinking Salsa Delgado Cross rims or Mavic A719, any advice for spokes or hubs would be handy as I'm not really sure about either of those yet, or alternate rims I should consider would be great!

This lot > Went for the Alpine 3 spokes in the end
Took apart my old front wheel to put the rim on the rear. Building them took ages but truing was so easy with that many spokes to play with. Slight downside to the Halo hub - although the wheelnuts it comes are tempered they've used 17mm nuts, also the axle sticks out the end by 3-4mm each side. Not major just a little annoying.
Ended up with this pair
Unequal tyre sizes increase my head angle by .75deg
Feels much more solid on the rear now compared to the old cheapo wheel I had on there.
Total cost of the front wheel - £30
Total cost of the rear wheel - £90I now need a bike to match the quality of the wheels.

Recommendations for shops to do a wheel build?
Push?Have a rim and hub now, but am very much out of practice with wheel building, would prefer to get someone to do it.
-
• #244
Yep, speak to Mike or Prav at PUSH. They'll source spokes for you and do the wheel build very quickly, and give you a polo discount.
-
• #245
PUSH. Best dudes in the biz.
-
• #246
Vadius (or what ever they are called) closer to you and LHBPA discount.
Not a smear on push by the way, who are awesome, just incase kev wants something south.
-
• #247
Arunas is gone from there, and I've never been to Push before, so I'm gonna give Push a look.

I've got some spare sheets of plain black corex (4mm, I think) going spare... 666mm x 1000mmm, enough for two disks... £2... Hit me up...

Follow up: Mike in Push Cycles in Stoke Newington built me up my new rear wheel.
Nice strong build, cheap too with the polo discount. So they get my thumbs up.

Yep, Push are so good to polo (and are just a great bike shop in general).
All my polo wheels have been Push built, the 700s by Hassan, and the 26s by either Prav or Mike.
eeerrrmahgeeeerrrd, you guyz. I'm going to have to get it now, aren't I.
