  • It's a one-and-a-half mile journey!!!!! You could do it on a handglider in less than ten minutes.

  • dont go through bank. go along high holborn then down to cannon street then at the end of cannon street is LB not quiet but the most efficient way.

or you could go along the rivers edge

  • seriously what is the problem here? There are cars on the road? Ride round them it's a five minute journey, talking of "wasteing life energy" is a bit hypocritical methinks

or you could go along the rivers edge

Or you could do "A Crane" and draft a bus at nearly 30mph all the way over London Bridge, that'd save you loads of time.

  • But Ed, this is a serious issue, deserving its own thread. Simply suggesting using handlebars to steer aound obstructions does not acknowledge the gravitas of the situation.

I admit it's one thing P-M should just work out himself with a bit of experimentation but what's wrong with wanting to try and find a quieter route? Seems like a sensible idea to me. Bank -> H.H e.t.c at rush hour is annoying, so you do one of two things, either just get over it or try to find a different route. He is trying option 2, just not on his own.

P-M, just experiment, it's not hard.

  • kingsway, strand, embankment.

short cuts are often the longer route

  • pop in to nearest bike shop to you and get one of these.

The quietest streets are coloured yellow for you.
but "marie" and "charlie lcc" know the deal too.

  • Have you had cycle training yet, Paul-Michel?

Don't let your skill level limit the riding you do.

The best way (as others have said) is to try out all the routes and go with the one that feels best to you.

There are some other options on this one that haven't been mentioned, like Great Queen Street->Southwark Bridge, but don't deprive yourself of the joy of getting to know London by riding and discovering it.

  • Whatbaout Theobalds and Clerkenfixed to Old Street roundabaout and then down City road, straight (ish) to London Bridge?

Also, try and rmember that in some ways, traffic is what is fun about riding around London. The open road and quiet lanes are for when we get outisde of Zone 4.

  • If your final target is south of Guy's hospital you could try Waterloo br, upper ground, cornwall road, the cut, union street, mermaid court ....

Did this - amazing route. Zero traffic and made bloody good time. :)

Oliver, I agree its nice to discover - I got lost on the way home around Peckham - but its also nice to try and learn from others too.

    Cheers all.

    Outside Zone 4?

Could you please enlighten me to these quiet lanes in zone 5 and 6.

The top end of this ride was pretty laneish and in Zone 6, I think... :

  • what's with the constant fucking piss taking on this forum? the guy was only wanting some advice.

  • Here's some advice....DON'T slip a bus a 30mph, 3ft from the backwheels all the way up Holborn.....

When the road turns into 20metres of near cavernous potholes just west of GIR, the miliseconds you have to react are barely enough to lay a nugget.

.. which is precisely what he got...

  • My experience is that this forum has always been a place for piss taking.

P-M has a habit of asking questions that he could either answer by UTFS or Google. He has also previously argued with people offering him advice, for example see his comments re courier bags.

His desire to get it right is fantastic but the lack of initiative displayed and inability to understand that there is often more than one solution (personal preference, cost etc) have started to become quite tiresome. As such there are moments when rather than just telling him to HTFU, UTFS etc some slightly more humorous and less constructive comments are made.

I refer my honourable friend to the answer I gave some minutes ago:

No mate in every one of your threads there is a trivial question that you could answer by trial and error just like everyone else instead of constantly wanting someone to hold your hand and/or change your nappy. It just gets exhausting that you seem incapable of just trying something for yourself, being a bit more independent and, sorry to say it, grown up.

and what threads would they be then? I thought this forum was for seeking help on genuine concerns you might have, not everyone knows everything and because that certain matter might seem "trivial" to others, you get fucking ripped for it. no need man.

  • actually that post of yours has really fucked me off. When i first got into riding, I built every thing my fucking self, I wasn't posting up trivial threads regarding issues on bikes, in fact i wasn't even on this forum then. and so what if i was? is the fucking internet, who gives a fuck? fuck you.
