this is exactly what happened to me after the mission workshop party last week

i reported the driver to the police, not heard anything since

  • No damage, but am sorely tempted to report to the local cop shop.

Of course report it. She caused an accident and then left the scene after refusing to give details.

The police will only start bestirring themselves to deal with this sort of thing if they're aware that it's happening.

  • Cheers DJ and Steff. I called the Met when I got into work, but they sounded deeply bored and told me to go to my local police station to file a report... Will do, though, if only for the statistics.

Will take a dose of cyclecraft this evening, if only to quieten the 'well, perhaps you should just stick to the gutter for an easy life, rather than claiming your space' voice.

here is what happened to me the other day

  • Eerily similar, just swap out van driver for middle-aged woman in black sports car. Will definitely follow it up.

Builders all around found it quite amusing; got a witness there. And, as she pointed out, it's all on cctv.

  • Today was an odd one, not a motorised vehicle incident, but alas two f**kwits on cycle incidents, first one, I'm flying down Crouch End hill towards Hornsey nearly spinning in 53/11, out pootles white genesis flyer, headphones not looking right across me - how I didnt wipe him and myself out I'll never know, needless to say he went on his merry way weaving through traffic and RLJ through ped's.

Then after watching numerous other RLJ on Finsbury Park and Holloway road (not empty btw fast moving traffic) but I guess the headphones and wavefarers make you immune to getting hurt when a car/van hits you, I think well one near miss aint too bad, boom I get to Penton Road to jump off and head down Pentonville, so I go on the right of the traffic to get to crossing and low and behold cyclist weaves straight out of waiting cars to the right doesn't look and bang we collide - WTF!!!! surely, have a look mate if you're going to pull out to the right, but no its my fault somehow for cycling down the right and he didn't think anyone would be there, apart from cars, motorcycles and other cycles...

Guess it's the sunny weather, brings out all the chumps, roll on the rain, I may get a bit soaked getting work but at least I get there in one piece.

People need to chill the fuck out around the intersection of Penton Road and Rentonville Road. It's a pretty massive road with heavy traffic to consider RLJing, and everyday I see people take a cursory glance and sail through. Half the time they have to pull up in a hurry midway across anyway. When the turn green its a clusterfuck of people shoulder to shoulder putting in 110% to get in front.

Similar thing at the Oval going towards Vauxhall most mornings - I simply don't get why some people ride like loons in an effort to get work 5 mins quicker, yet run the risk of never getting there at all.... or have I missed something?

  • Just after 5 today on Church road turning on to Essex Road N1

Some little dick no older than 13 shouting at me to get off my bike, chasing me and trying to block my path whilst being generally abusive, scary! Managed to cycle away but I thought he was going to push me off my bike!

  • My epic close call was actually quite a while ago, but thought I'd share anyways. Was riding the north downs on my road bike (yes, I'm a cheap whore and cheat on my single once and a while and ride something with a few options) near Woldingham. Was coming down a hill towards a round about and about 50 yards in front of me a huge bull, complete with a set of horns 2.5 feet on each side, came charging out of the bush onto the road, stopped in the middle of the road staring at me. I locked up my brakes desperately hoping to slow from the 33mph I was doing to 0 as fast as possible. I managed to stop about 20 yards from the bull not sure what to do, looking behind me the nearest car had stopped about 30 yards behind me. With no help from the vehicle, I also realized at that point I was wearing a red jersey (double crap). What followed felt like an eternity, but was more like a 20 second stare down, while i feared for my life. Maybe I won the stare down, but the bull then finished crossing the road and left me with weak legs, just being thankful to have not got gored.

  • mjs110 definitely report it, especially if you have witnesses

plus you cleverly took a picture of yourself reflected in the boot of her car, proving you were there

    watertight =)

  • Well spotted, Fox!

  • Close call for me, but another guy was not so lucky...

He was on an MTB and got knocked down by an SUV doing the overtake and mindless-left turn manoeuvre westbound on Euston Road last night. He was in the left hand lane, I was in the centre of the same lane a few metres behind on the overtake when this 4x4 overtook us both and instantly turned left in front of us.

I had to brake/swerve to stop myself hitting the back of it while the MTB rider got knocked down by the passenger side door (he ditched it well, could've been a whole lot worse). The driver didn't even stop, MTB guy, myself and a good Samaritan had to chase him down a couple of backstreets before stopping him at a junction.

His deadly-serious defence: "How fast were you going?!"

    God help us.

Was well impressed with MTB guy's composure during the exchange actually, not sure I would've been anywhere near as composed if it had been me on the road (I made a lunge for the rear windscreen wipers during the hit!)

  • did you get his details and report it to to police?

  • Realise this is an old thread - if there's a newer one that deals with the same stuff I'll move over.

Immediately after nearly having my rear wheel taken out by a half asleep mini driver on euston road this morning some twonk in a small van decided he was fed up of waiting in lane so he pulled over from the left hand lane in to the bus lane without indicating. I was going at a fair lick down the bus lane and this meant my shoulder was introduced to his rear tail light (but stayed on the stead).

I then went over to the passenger window and asked him what the hell he was doing - he starts getting in to a fit of rage saying I punched his van! His wife is screaming blue murder in the passenger seat as he undoes his seatbelt and launches a punch across her out the window at me! Caught me lightly but he was no joe frazier.

The thought went through my head to say "alright lets do this then" but thought better of it, lights went green and he sped off with his wife still screaming. all a bit surreal. Didn't get his number plate so I guess that's the end of that.

  • wow i bet that took you by surprise. glad to hear you're alright.

i'd love 'someone' in the same situation to grab the fist and like do some kind of jean claude van damme move on his arm to make him wish he didn't do that again...

  • I'd look for CCTV footage, he nearly took you out with his van and then assaulted you, no matter how badly. If he does either again it could end up a lot worse. Definitely report it to the old bill.

  • Get their plates, V888 form to find where they live, dissolve their bodies in quick lime. Call yourself Crippen.

  • Holy shit. Glad you didn't end up having a punch-up.

I always scream as soon as I see someone about to make a silly manouevre towards me.

  • I was riding home yesterday after a long day and a long ride when I suddenly realised I was no longer holding on to the handle bars and was in fact grating the skin off the road. Once I had collected my thoughts and had a look around I realised I had ridden into a speed hump without even noticing which threw me off my bike... I know this is probably going to get me slated but** I think I must have dozed off whilst riding along!**

I think that deserved to be quoted again.
