  • Just to be sure, does the cassette go some of the way onto the freehub body, if so it may be a weirdass Shimano DA freehub body that was only intended to take DA cassettes- for one year (AFAI remember) they tried ally as a freehub body material, albeit with deeper splines- but went back to shallow splines (and compatibilty with all Shimano cassettes) and Ti for DA bodies the next year.

The man speaks the truth, I was inexactly the same position as Julian Stock, ended up buying a whole new hub and having the wheel re built, this was a set of model B's though

  • I am about to purchase a bike frame, as a replacement for damaged one which is fitted with SRAM Red components.

The new frame, can come with a 10 speed Ultegra crankset fitted which would mean it wouldn't require a trip to the bike shop to get a crank fitted - I would just need to swap the components over and cable it which I think is about time I learnt to do.

But, would the Shimano crankset (Shimano Ultegra 6700) work with 2011 SRAM Red front and rear derailleurs and 2011 SRAM Red shifters and cassette?

    All components are 10 speed.

I understand the only non-compatible issue come with mixing shifters and derailleurs e,g, SRAM Shifters, Shimano derailleurs.

    Appreciate any comments.

    Thanks

    Joe

  • Yes

  • Yes, it will. But swapping the cranks and bottom bracket from the Ultegra units fitted to the SRAM Red ones on the damaged bike is a pretty straightforward job, and the Ultegra cranks are damned ugly in my humble opinion, provided the Red cranks aren't BB30.

  • Thanks.

No the new frame is a different BB (Pressfit30) and old crank won't fit and isn't worth fitting (old and it's Apex).

Will there be no issues with the actuation ratios - the front derailleur move over correctly and trim work?

The only reason I'm going for Ultegra is they don't sell SRAM cranks, and it'll cost me extra to get one fitted as I can't do it. I quite like the look of the black ultegra cranks.

  • Shimano do not make cranks natively compatible with PF30 frames, so some kind of adapter will be installed for the 24mm axle that Shimano seem married to.

FWIW I run Ultegra cranks with SRAM running gear on one of my bikes. Zero issues and shifts better than SRAM chainrings. I also quite like the aesthetic, but only on certain frames.

  • Ah, if the old cranks are Apex then they'd be a downgrade on Ultegra, and as for the aesthetics, it would as ever be a boring old world if we all agreed.
