That's very sensible. It's a cliche, but prevention really is better than a cure.
This is a most unusual lfgss thread; advice is sought, advice is received, advice is acted upon and all without swearing.

ok, after some thinking i've booked myself in for a visit tomorrow with a colleague to Bluerip00 on here
Really don't want knee issues in the future, so rather have it looked at right away. I assume that even if I don't have any pain / issues now (though i have), he can take a good look at my knees and check if i need to strengthen them or do anything to aid them in the future
let us know what the diagnosis is.
after having knee mistracking diagnosed i can't ride behind anyone without looking at how straight their legs are. i see lots of people who's knees brush the top tube who would probably benefit from footbeds and the correct alignment, they obviously don't have any problems like i did but they would be a stronger cyclist if they had it corrected. it causes a muscle imbalance so that one quad gets overdeveloped and the rest get underused. weak glutes were part of the problem too, often the area of pain/discomfort can be caused by something one joint further up the chain. -

incidentally, I always feel like my right foot is over-pronoating when I pedal—*I've tried to move the cleat out to stop my foot from rolling over, but it doesn't seem to work.
I've begun to think that I should switch to proper clipless road pedals on my geared bike as they spread the pressure out over a larger pedal (as opposed to mtb spd's)? Any thoughts? -

Ok, been to the phsyio, saw Dave Baker, he def seems to know his stuff, not that i have anything to compare with though :)
Basically i'm tight like piano wire from my chest down so need to stretch a lot more to get more mobile. My knee is fine, nothing that inflamed to talk about so can still ride but no long rides for a week or so. Also told me to use the geared bike rather than fixed.
He said my ligaments going from the hip down on the outer side of my legs and attaches to the knee (these had a name of course, but there were so many new names for stuff in my legs that it mostly went in one ear and out the other) were too tight, so were my calfs, hamstrings and so forth. So what i need is to stretch a lot more. He'll be sending me videos with exercises / stretches I can do and i'm going back in a week so he can stretch bits i can't do myself. He also did some work on my knee today which seemed to help, though it felt a lot better today compared to yesterday.
Also he advised me to get a foam roller that i can use to basically give myself a leg massage which will benefit the stretching as well.
All in, i'm very happy i went straight away, good to get a professional opinion and find out what i need to do in the future to keep my legs happy.

That would be your 'IT Band' I believe. I have had trouble with my right knee recently and I have found specific stretches (as well as the normal stretches I (try) to do before a long ride) help with the discomfort after to 20 mile mark of a ride...
There are loads of exercises on YouTube. I may buy myself a foam roller too, to make it all a bit easier.

osgood schlatters
You are the only other person in the world I know who has suffered from this (apart from me). Apparently very common in teenagers. Yeah right, tell that to all my other schoolmates who took the piss out of me when I couldn't take part in any sport for a year when I was around 14. Thank fuck Forrest Gump hadn't been released back then.
I have lovely legs (oh matron), shame they're ruined by what looks like two kneecaps in each one.

yup that's the bad boy
cheers for the video, that foam roller thing is what he talked about, seems like a really good idea. not just for this but also to use to do your own leg massage, surely a nice thing after a ride

rollers are £10 it's rude not to get one.

I'm going to visit my local running shop tomorrow to see if they have any. Let us know if you have any success with it Kboy.

you don't need the long roller a short one is fine. i cut mine in half to give to a friend, that and i lack the floorspace to use a wider one.
the back shop in wigmore st and the crystal palace sports clinic sell them. -

These dig deeper into the muscles than rollers as they don't deform as much.
Hurts like fuck to use them but pays off quickly.

• #271
great you've got a diagnosis and are able to do something about it kboy.
i remember reading this article about fixed gear riding and knee injury from sheldon browm which gives some general advice about knee health (which was really useful helping me recover from a broken patella) -
• #272
On his gear ratio you need to be spinning around 200 rpm to get to 33mph on a descent.
-
• #273
that article makes a lot of sense. Nothing new in there, but good to read it.
I'll be on my geared bike for a while, both to get used to it and make sure it works for dunwich, but also to rest my knees.
That said, i'm riding quite a low gearing, never skid etc so doubt fixed is the main issue. I just think it's payback time for me never properly stretching, + i'm tense to begin with. Will be interesting to see how that roller thing works, just ordered one

can we have a pic of your face the first time get your weight right on a tight spot in your quads.
if you are as tight as you say it will be a visit to the depths of the pain cave via the hurt locker. -

I had it too. Got me out of cross country running at school though - every cloud... etc
