Knee Pain

  • my left knee hurts as does my left elbow, and also my left leg fatigues much quicker then my right leg. I swear this is true and it doesn't make sense to me.
It's as if my left body is less fit than the right, although i cycle on average about 10miles a day.

Im just wondering if anyone heard of such a thing happening to anyone else ?

  • I've started riding a fixed track bike (Fuji Track) on Wednesday. I commute like 15 minutes in the morning and after work home. I realised I have pain in the knees when I try to pedal hard and start getting speed.

I think my posture/frame size/seat height is quite ok. I ride a 48/15 (fuji std.) ratio. Is this too high for a beginner?

Drop the ratio and sort out your position. You can find all the info how to already on the forum.

Pain on the inside of the knee may mean that your kneecap is pulled too much in one direction. See a doctor and get a physio referral if it persists. It's an extremely common symptom.

  • If I start pedaling smooth and don't "hit to run fast" I dont recognise any pain. But if I want to accelerate fast, it's there. So I think it's the ratio..

  • I've got an 18T sprocket you can borrow if you want?

Nothing great- just a Surly, but it'll give you a view on what a more relaxed ratio is like.

  • Well there's just one prob, I live in Germany ;)
    but thanks for the offer

  • i've just developed (since my last ride 10 hours ago) some knee pain only on my left knee. i can feel the muscle/tendon/medical word mving when i bend my knee. i felt it a little bit earlier in the week but thought nothing of it. anyone else had this? it might be an old skateboarding injury playing up.

Is your natural skidding position right foot forward? or are you ambidexterous?

  • can do both but majority of the time right is behind. but i got the ambidextrous one legged/over the bar skids on lock now

  • Is the pain where the muscle at the front of the shin connects to the joint?

  • I would say now to anyone who has knee pain. Go and get it seen to by a good osteo/physio asap.

Book a private session, will set you back no more than £40 and get it diagnosed correctly. It is something you definitely do not want to make worse

  • I switch all the time, left/right foot forward, sometimes its difficult to distinguish between, pain/fatigue/old injuries flaring up though.

  • nah its on the side of my knee next to the cap.

i think going for a check up is a good idea, its been about 3 years since i last went to the doctor, but i've got 2 osteopath aunts so i can wait till i see them next

  • +1 to Mikec

and also consider a cycelfit - if you are experiencing regular discomfort as a result of cycling they can really help you out, its worth it in the long term.

How do you find a good one? http://www.londonfgss.com/thread4924.html? Anyone care to add to that?

Specialized sell footbeds that come with thin plastic wedges to tilt the front part of your foot a degree or two in or out. I don't get on with the footbeds themselves, but i find my knees are a lot more comfortable with the wedges in my shoes.

Jesus, DJ, are you a shareholder or something?

  • Jesus, DJ, are you a shareholder or something?

no, not a shareholder,st a very satisid customer.

went in with loads of problems and then got them fixed at cyclefit. as have mentioned previously would rather pay some one to make my cycling more comfortable, efficient and less injurious to myself. 4 sessions of physio costs a similar amount to a cyclefit, but the cyclefit addresses many more issues.

  • What about getting a cyclefit done though? What do you think about that? Would you recommend it?

  • will cycle fit recommend an OTP frame(s) based on their findings? or do you take in a frame and they sort it out?

  • my knee is still killer, worse now than before. ive been takin homeopathic remedies from my mum, which normally works perfectly, but they aren't doing the trick this time

gonna just whip some pain killers before i gotta go out rideing again, its making me well slow with only 75-50% power

  • can you shift your position so that you aren't powering up on the cranks with such a flexed knee?
Usually the knee is weakest when flexed past 90 deg, and accelerating/forcefully contracting in this position weakens the stability of the knee...

  • Make sure you're kneed aren't forced in strange directions with you're feet clipped in.

  • Sounds like the same injury I currently have - although I 'did' my knee running.

Might be that it's just inflamed from a light muscle stretch. Doc says might be caused by lack of a slow build to the levels you are expecting the muscle to cope with + apparently Paracetamol helps - don't ask me how (nothing to do with the painkilling properties)

  • Slow down.
    Stop.

If I notice a knee twinge of any sort it's time to back off fast or long rides. Depending on how bad, stop riding for a day or two and see how it is again after a rest.

Be careful, Crane, do have it checked out properly, either by your osteopath aunts or by someone else. It's really not worth insisting on continuing to ride, especially hard, while this is going on. You can of course do it, as you're young, but you might be incurring a long-lasting injury way prematurely. Don't let them tell you that you can't ride your bike at all (this never works with cyclists), but as hippy says, take it easy for sure. Good luck with getting it sorted!
