  • So with the Honda engine not breaking down yet, does that mean Torro Rosso have completed more laps in one day than Alonso all last season?

  • Alonso did 29 laps in last years pre season test where Torro Rosso did 93 in the first day of testing

So not quite, but almost :)

  • Did i hear its McLarens new wheel nut system, thats why they had to sit it in the garage for ages because they couldnt risk any more wheel nut failures .....

i would have though the priority would have been mileage , not saving 50grams per nut with a new system - but hey what do i know :)

  • ahhh McLaren..............

  • And another incident here:

  • ....starts again this weekend - we'll know soon enough the pecking order.....just hope the gap between first and second in Qualy isnt 1.3 seconds or its boredom season once more

  • I think the restrictions on engine replacements is going to be the biggest factor and could play two ways. Run less power and make them last maybe be finish a couple places down the grid but be consistently placed or wind them up and get get as many good results as possible to hopefully offset any engine penalties / failures.

  • well like last seasons when there was an uproar about engine penalties - if there is a big gap to the front, then the reliability of those behind begins to suffer as they try and catch up, and also they want to bring new bits into the engine too, so we see more penalties and back-of-the-grid starts.....

given facing another boring season, it could be that the rules change about the engine penalties midway through in order to make the competition closer

one thing is for sure, that Merc has been pretty reliable compared to Ferrari and Renault (should i really mention honda...no)

  • I don't think they would change the rules midway through the season, teams that tried to make it work will have a tantrum.

  • WHAAAAAAAAAT! this is F1 , they always change the rules half way through - blown exhaust, s-duct, suspension designs, oil burn, engine mappings, its a given!

  • I finished Adrian Newey's book last night, I have to say that I agree with him - make the regulation on power unit completely free, but give them 60kg of super unleaded for each car on Sunday morning.

  • ...actually they should allocate fuel and tyres for the entire season to the team at the start, and let them use them as they see fit.
this would mean that if you get punted off by Max Verstappen on corner 1, you have more fuel for the rest of the season so can up your "mix" and be faster and make up points in the championship etc etc keeping it closer - also if your car is a dog for some reason again, up your fuel mix, and take the leaner races later in the season.
same goes for tyres - certain amount of the different compounds per season and bring them to any race you want.

  • Methanol would be cooler (no pun intended) and watch the power levels sky rocket.

  • On a different note, I now have one of these:

  • They'd need tanks that were twice as big (or double the fuel stops.) Don't fancy being on the Methanol re-fuelling rig either, it's horrible stuff to handle.

  • That's cool!

  • Are they on e85 at the moment? Still uses a heap more fuel that petrol.

  • Nope. Custom F1-only special brews, albeit based on the compounds found in commercially available petrol. The regulations on fuel are quite involved, but it's not E85.

  • watch those lights when going into a car park ;)

  • riccy 3 place grid penalty already - f1 loves its penalties,

aparantly it was for not being under a certain time in a red flag situation - the red flag being thrown for a wire that came out of the ground on the start finish straight.

    its his home race too

  • Ah, good old F1, managing to fuck up the racing before it's even started. Raikonnen puts Bottas in the gravel, no penalty. Ricciardo slows down massively for red flags, but not quite enough for this weeks' FIA random-number, so gets a 3 place grid penalty. Incoherent, inconsistent and stupid. F1 rumbles on as before.

  • i do wonder if middle teams might end up jumping over to FE - i know i know i know its not F1 (yet) but its surgance from nothing to quite an attractive high profile series in such a short time has been quite on eye opener - for example someone like McLaren spending money they dont have to never get the glory days back in F1 could just leave in 2020 when the contracts to stay in F1 are all up...again Red Bull could also do the same - and in the process save themselves OOOODLES of cash and lets face it - HASSLE that F1 seems to have become now.

  • "hello mr marlboro, we have decided that, as we suck, we going to leave the billion viewer premier formula of motorsport and take our team over to the electric series. it is shown on fox sports 15 to about 12 people - you're still cool for the cashola, yeah?"

  • "and the fray bentos mclaren team take pole again!"
