Can hardly wait to see how the teams really perform in a race. Its said to be close, but we'll see. I have a feeling Red Bull are sandbagging again. But Ferrari must do better, and I think they're showing promise. Honestly chomping at the bit to see the first practice.......

First practice over; the usual suspects at the front. McLaren seem off the pace though.

And not just Button.
Altogether not the best "package" at this moment in time.

bodieanddoyle, any bets (friendly) that Rosberg might outshine my boy in Qualies? Its a friendly wager, so its imaginary monies, or Sierra Leonne dollars. You know that I think Rosberg is in for a whuppin', but of course, my blind Grenadian assessments may be affected by rum.

Rum? At this time of the morning?
Wild man!

From the country I come from, its in the contract mate.....citizenship revoked for lack of ability to hold your drink. Nothing I can do about that. Oh yes, and day off landing on a Friday for total win. Anyway, I never drink to get drunk, unless I'm visiting my sis, then its a competition. :-)

Serious question.
Will Massa be a real challenge to Alonso this year, and the others at the top? He's looking really speedy - a real racer again, not a makeweight.

Hamilton comes across to me as a sulky arsed spoilt bratt, the incident where he was secretly giving the finger at the post race interviews, is one example.
His none stop excuses when it goes bad and his constant fakery about being a team player...he clearly isn't so why spout?
My favourite f1 driver for attitude is Irvin...he really didn't give toss.

I hope so, and credit to Ferrari for standing by him.

I hope that he's not only a challenge for Fernando. I hope he sticks it to all of 'em.
F1 Law states that there has to be a Brazilian in the mix.

Ok. Predictions for Qualies?
This is my guess:
Vettel
Hamilton
Massa
Webber
Alonso
Rosberg
RaikkonenIf Rosberg really pushes, he could be higher. Raikkonen is the dark horse.

I'd swap Raikkonen and Massa. Lotus looking very quick

Would love to see Massa get some wins this season, wouldn't count on it though. He's a Webber to Alonso's Vettel.

I like Webber, and would love to see him find the pace to outshine Vettel.
Unlikely I know.
Has anyone had a look at the 2014 regs? Very keen to understand more about the energy recovery system, looks extremely interesting.

That's sad. I was looking through the Guardian's interactive circuit guide earlier and found myself getting annoyed at all the soulless Hermann Tilke tracks we have today. I watched two on-board videos of Hamilton from last season, one at Monza and one at the chinese GP. Monza was great to watch. Fast sweeping corners, long straights and chicanes. The other one just didn't have any flow. Annoying stop-start twisty section with corners that tighten further after the apex and then a monstrous straight. After Melbourne there's Malaysia, China and Bahrain. How long before more of the classic tracks are ditched for more tedious safety-first circuits. If Spa or Monza go I might write an angry letter to someone

Tragically, I believe the simplest reason for Vettel's continued dominance over Webber in terms of speed, comes down to something as simple as weight. The cars weigh the same, and the power output is the same. But for all the horsepower available, its straight physics (well, biology and physics) that since Webber is taller than Vettel, if of the same approximate fitness levels and fat percentages, he will weigh more. He does therefore weighs more, and that, to me is what makes Vettel look good against him. I think Webber works harder than anyone to keep his weight down to the barest minimum, but he can't shrink bone, and will always be heavier.
Poor guy, he always looks gaunt, with his cheeks deeply sunken in, whereas the other drivers look normal. They haven't got the weight disadvantage to battle that he does.
Shorter, lighter drivers favoured by use of KERS.

Car + driver weights are all the same though. It does mean that Vettel get a bit more ballast to play with.

It's the ballast placement that's the advantage they claim in that article. If they set a minimum weight for driver/helmet plus the seat, this could even it out. If it gets Webber looking a bit healthier, that would be nice.

Yeah I just read the article after posting that. It's not like go karts where the driver weight has a direct effect on power/weight ratio. It's definitely a factor but quite far down the list I would wager. Especially considering the car's weight drops by about 180kg throughout the race.

Where in the car does Hippy hide at the start?
