Well in the place i mentioned i counted 5 cameras that have a veiw of the bike rack locking things(what are they called??), i'm sure when theres that many it would help.
But your right, most of the time it dosnt help, i had some chavs walk off with my mtb before outside a shop with CCTV and people around, later they just left it there after trashing it abit, had some older dudes who knew me herd it was stolen and threatend them abit, i was lucky...

Ok People, opinions:
Which one below would you choose, If you had to carry only one lock. Bike is a bit of a shitheap. Probably can't lock wheel + frame + stand with krypto, clearance is large. So If I go Krypto I'd have to get a pitlock or cheapo version, as front has a QR dyno hub which I would like to keep. Rear is a coaster hub with track nuts (meaning it also has that fiddly arm thing that bolts to NDS chainstay)

D-lock and pitlock.
it's for your beater isn't it? check out the KryptoLok® series 2 Mini, it's slighty longer than the Evo Mini by 3.5cm and cost the same (£25ish).

What Ed said, ..........or the GRPS lock, or the Motrax Large Disk-lock. The latter being ideal for locking a frame and 2 wheels together.
But, if specifically choosing one of the locks you've suggested, it would have to be the Abus Granit X-54. It's the only one that actually makes the list.

Cheers lads. I'll look into it. It's been a while since I had a good look at this thread, it's bloody awesome GA2G!
Abus x54 will be going in the basket or maybe use the bracket thingy that I have never used. Or perhaps will carry both the Krypto and the Steeloflex. I still think that two different kinds of locks is better than two of the same basic type. Any opinions on that?
Also, did you notice, GA2G or anyone, the copper who's short lived career on the forum included some advice that he reckoned U locks were worth avoiding?
PS what does 'toodles' mean, GA2G?

Granit-X 54.
Survived one attack with barely a scratch and isn't really all that heavy compared to most of the locks on this thread.
The frame mount is more heavy-duty than those for smaller Abus D-locks (with the lock locking through the mount rather than just clipping in) although on my frame the only sensible place I could find to put it is on the downtube facing forward where it has a tendency to rattle against my bottle cage and get caught in the leg holes on my 3/4 length shorts.
I think the solution to the latter is to grow fatter legs.
Also, should you end up getting the longer variant of the Granit-X at a later date, it also fits the same mounting bracket.
You get two keys and a card with a number on it (needed for duplicate keys I guess).
I'm still a bit skeptical that it is as good as a lock with a thicker shackle, but it seems Good Enough(tm).

As my story above indicates, the X 54 is pretty damned good. I have mine mounted on the seat tube just fine.
The only downside is it's not a particularly pretty thing to have mounted there. But hey ho...
If the Stolen Bikes thread is anything to go by, the Steel-O-Flex is next to useless.

Toodles is a word my phone spat out, just because it felt like it.

on the downtube
I meant seat tube. Duh.

I had a chat with the chaps at A.E.Wilson Cycles yesterday, by phone, and they have been selling loads of the GRPS Lock that I own. Seems like it has been becoming very popular with people searching the net. Considering that Wilson's don't have an internet presence, this thread is certainly proving a useful advert for bike security. To be honest, I'm a bit pleased about that. Slowly, the message is getting out there.
Great to hear this. How are you finding the GRPS lock having owned it for a while now?

It hasn't failed me at all. I don't lock it up for hours in the rain though, so maybe I treat my lock differently to others.

I got really frustrated with my Fagh mini the other night, in Soho, only things to lock up to were posts too wide for the lock, or railings with "no bikes" signs. Ended up at Charing Cross Road and locking to the railings. My beer was warm by the time I'd got back.
Any actual bike locking facilities in Soho that aren't down a dark alley off the square? I'm starting to regret upgrading from a chain. Also, GA2G, is the Wilsons lock really massive? I think I saw it through the shop window

I suppose it is. There's a comparison to the Abus Granit X-54.

Haha, I love this forum! Cheers

I am pretty sure that those GPRS locks are a rebranded, or at least from the same factory as Marksman locks, as they have an identical lock body.
One thing that no one has mentioned, but makes a pretty big difference with motorbikes, is the use of a cover. Its amazing the amount of thiefs who cant be bothered to look under a cover if there is something else worthy of their attention near by

Not sure if this has been posted up elsewhere on the forum (apologies if so) but looks like there's a 2in longer version of the Evo Mini on the way (looks like one version is combo packed with a Kryptoflex)...
Hipster coloured skins to customise existing Evo Minis too:

None of those would be listed in the list though. Probably better suited to the Locks thread.

Good point. Sorry - I'll move it

There's no harm in the post, but they're just locks I wouldn't recommend.

Sounds good, thanks. I think I'll add it to this week's shopping list...

Having read this thread I felt my bike was entirely unsafe with just a KryptoLok series 2, so I just picked up an abus 54x plus, as I dont live in london this will be fine for the moment but I will be moving up soon so a mini d will be in order for the front. Is it ott to get a new york for the front? I'm presuming that london tea leaves are a bit more determined that swansea ones?
Anyway cheers all for the advice in this thread -
• #823
I'd personally get something smaller for the front. I use an Evo Mini but my front wheel is probably worth about £20. I guess with a longer one there's more scope for double-locking the frame, but you have to carry more metal around. With proper bike stands I can nearly always fit my Fagh and Evo around wheel/frame/stand front and back.
-
• #824
hanged_up, the question is, how much would you spend to get another front wheels if it got stolen? can you able to buy another £20 wheel easily?
No matter how cheap the bike/component is, it still cost money to replace it.

Yeah I kinda meant that I think the Pro Evo is enough deterrent for my fairly nondescript looking wheel. So if the above poster had a £200 wheel they should consider something more secure.
I don't understand how CCTV helps anyone?
Thieves and ne'er do wells wear hoodies and such specifically to avoid their faces being caught on camera: I've never heard of anyone being caught from CCTV footage?
... And the downside is the whole surveillance state thing and the high cost. Wish they wouldn't bother! /politics.
