  • click the link Squire, it'll take you where you need to look

I'd suggest two locks, one for front, one for rear, forget the cable as they can be easily cut apparently......

  • I have one of those...never any probs and still have the bike and lock so keeps the ferals away...tad expensive but depends on what you have spent on the bike.........

This looks the business. Anyone have any knowledge or experience with this or anything similar?

  • Can anyone reccomend any decent padlocks? I just got an 11mm chain as something extra to throw on mine and my girlfriend's bikes when in our locked shed and already free locked with a mini fhag each. Our landlord won't allow us to install any sort of wall anchor or anything which is annoying! I used my best UTFS skills but couldn't turn anything up.

  • ^^ I can't help but feel that would work better if it was more discrete "shit! This things beeping at me!" smashes beeping thing

  • I use an alarmed padlock occasionally ..

    • I have a squire lock which I am looking to sell, PM me if you want it.
  • I already have an alarmed padlock. I piss people off regularly with it.

The good thing about the beeper is that you don't have to be in earshot, necessarily. You are informed when the bike is moved and so you can go and catch the perpetrator if he hasn't run off already..

  • Lock barrel broke today. Took 15 mins to get through it with an angle grinder.
    Seriously tough.

  • I'd say 15 minutes is pretty long. Nothing is safe

  • Well apart from the barrel breaking it worked. And I didnt think it would take as long as it did. Very very noisy too so nobodys gonna cut it and not be noticed.

That's reassuring. I'm being so paranoid whenever I leave my bike outside, even for 2 mins... And I have the same U Lock.

Proprietary microprocessor based encryption algorithm for more than 4.2 billion sets of independent ID code for intruder-proof and hacker-proof protection

32bit key. Bit shit from a crypto standpoint.

  • why waste effort protecting it from 'hackers' when the common thief would just hit it with a brick?

  • locks that don't work>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    Politely disagree.

The standard two-stage tests for locks are 5 minutes. This lock survived the power tool attack for near to 15 minutes. The power tool assault is considered Stage 2, and is far more effective than the Stage 1 attack (hand tools and leverage). A GOLD standard is given to locks that survive for 5 minutes of Stage 1, then possibly 5 minutes at Stage 2.

This 15 minute assault is actually significant, and shows how incredibly superior that particular lock is.

  • ^ If the key doesn't work, it isn't a working lock is it?

  • To continue the theme of bigging up OnGuard's far better value compared to Kryptonite: Onguard Bulldog mini is exactly the same of not better than the Kryptonite Evo Mini at half the price - Don't pay double for a name!

  • besam, have a look here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread71407.html#post2375585

    It's the Secondary Locks thread.

A lot worse. Jams easily. Harder to use fluently.

  • Not sure if this is a (marginally) cheaper version of the onguard brute?
It has that onguard/magnummy silver shackle thing going on, and claims to be 16mm.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLAUD-BUTLER-16mm-D-SHACKLE-LOCK-/290759963418#vi-content

Similar price on amazon, various websites

  • I think someone posted a similar lock from Asda or something - they are NOT made by Onguard - just copies of Onguard's design imo. May be good enough but the real thing is to be found 1 or 2 quid more.. You can tell it is not an Onguard by the mounting bracket. Onguard use the same one in all their U locks I think.

  • Does anybody know if Abus offer any anti theft cover, like what Kryptonite offer. I'm considering getting a Granit 54 but now I'm thinking a Kryptonite product might be better as I don't have any insurance and having theft cover would be a bonus. Has anyone made a claim through their scheme and did they actually pay out as I can imagine they may just blame my locking method or something to try to deny responsibility.

  • The Kryptonite cover is much better than anything Abus has. That said, third party insurance is the ticket, and not the jump-through-hoops warranty fine print shenanigans you face with a lock-with-warranty policy.
