  • That's right, I'm riding an old road frame but it's not a very tight one and now the rear wheel rim is replaced with a DP18 and that's why I guess the Fahg could be too small. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4014/4540939118_27d9e5d111_z.jpg

I'd like to see a picture of your locking method, though I think it's equal to this one here plus including the rim into the shackle.

Was this the sort of thing you were looking for?

finally got a chance to take pics of the mini fagh locking rear(dp18 rim/28c tyre)/frame/sheffield stand.

    this topic should help;

  • Yo can we get some more info on this "abus 401 mini" mentioned previously. If its 1kg and half the weight of a Fahg but still sold secure gold. sounds pretty good, but too good to be true for primary? ps. how hard is it to carry one of these Fahgs is it that much of a burden

  • ^^^^^the Yellow One

  • the rating is for insurance purpose rather than the actual strength of the lock.

  • I'm definitely lucky I don't live in London, in this regard anyway. I leave my bike locked up while I get a list to Bristol. That's 5 days a week, every other week (when I drive in) for 10 hours a day. I used the Fagh on it and it in a very visible place with loads of footfall and so far (touch wood) no issues. Both bikes would probably qualify as beaters though.

The weight is an issue: horrible having it in the backpack, but when the bags full or I don't have a long way to go I just sling over the stem and bars

The consensus, based on measurements and info from abus was, that the 401 should be considered an alternative to the Evo Mini.
It is not in the same league as the Fagh in terms of cutting-resistance.

I think 2kg of lock are very annoying to carry in the bag or at the belt. Wouldn't want to do that. Plus, it is a pain if dirt and grease from the lock gets smeared around inside the pack.
Mounted to the bike, 2kg are fine. Thats just about two bottles of water, no big deal.
Have a look at the "megablock" from twofish, that seems to work for fitting a Fagh to the bike. Not suitable for fashion-victim bikes, though. :p

PS: Krypto should really work on finally making a useful mount for their locks. Abus have been doing that for years. How hard can it be?

  • Stay tuned!

  • Heavy Duty D-Locks/U-Locks: (Primary security)

So is this actually a decent lock? I was looking at one of those Evolution Dlock/cable combo packs, but ive already got a fairly thick Abus cable lock. I was thinking about the NY but it almost seems that thieves would target it specifically as its so common/unique looking.

  • No. Its not a decent lock. Thats why I bought it for myself, because it is no good, and I really want someone to come along and steal my Capo 5.

kicks66, I started this thread, and have been heavily involved with promoting bike locking security for this forum, and all those that visit it. All the locks in the list are recommended, but No, that lock is possibly not as good as a Fahg Mini, or some of the best locks from the best manufacturers. BUT it is used with confidence by many, including me. I have answered your question in the jokey manner I felt you might have been asking it in.

Cable locks are NOT recommended. Not at all - not any of them.

I was asking just because it seems that for a price thats so much less than the other types, its almost as if you could use multiple ones rather than a single Fahg (I know its bad using multiple of the same type, but you get the idea)

The cable I was just going to use for the front wheel in combination with a D-lock, I guess ill go buy one of them today.

On that note, I've seen online and in a few stores you can get hold of an Evolution Mini for £30 but none seem to be open on Sunday, does anyone know a shop that might stock it at that price open on a Sunday (quite a specific request...)

  • Evans. Use their price match policy, and Bob's your uncle.

  • ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ NOT recommended at all.

This is the LOCKS THAT WORK thread, and the alarm locks recommended here, cannot be easily snipped off, and the thief be quickly on their merry way with someone's bike. That lock is an alarm lock, yes, but it is easily cut away, and is therefore useless for the purposes of this thread. Whats the point of that lock, if it takes seconds to cut through it, and by the time the owner has come out to check on his bike, it would already be down the road? Therefore that is not a lock that works. At least, not well enough for us......the picky lot. Sorry for being so to the point, but I wouldn't like people to lose their bikes with a lock like that.

How about that lock as secondary lock? I already have Abus Granit Plus and Abus Varedo and the bike is insured (paranoid? oh yes!) It's a full Ti Van Nicholas with Ultegra built at Condor and thats my only bike (I dont own beater). I was thinking of getting an alarm lock as secondary security. Either the one in the video or the padlock (using the way edscoble is using on down tube).

    Which one do you suggest?

  • For a bike that valuable, I'd only recommend locks already in the list. The minimum being an ABUS Granit X 54.

Many others on here would recommend the Kryptonite Evolution Mini. I don't recommend compromises, hence this thread, but the choices are there. It's your call.

  • amey, I'd buy a beater rather than leave a bike like that unattended, locks aint going to stop the scallies pinching those precious bits and pieces...

  • Or.....use good locks, and also go the PitLock route, and then if still insecure, carry an alarm disc-lock, like those recommended. A beater, as stated above, is a another useful consideration. Though I feel that many use just one bike (like me0 so securing that one is of extreme importance. Malaysian is lucky enough to own multiple bikes.

  • Yes I am lucky to have multiple bikes and space to keep them, just thinking if I had a bike like that van nicholas no matter what the pit locks, top security locks and alarm locks, I'd always be worrying about it, as I do with my bikes... I'd rather build up a beater I didn't have to worry about, if I was leaving it for any extended period in London. There alot of bits to pinch off a road bike....

  • yea i mean leaving it in 'London' will happen rarely coz 90% of my bike use is to to commute to work everyday where I park it in the office garage, but I am looking out for a beater as an option. I have Pitlock which I will install next week : ) Thanks for the advice.

And I checked I do have ABUS Granit X 54.

  • I'm off to get one or two of those CRC locks today. Anyone know if they're still in East Street/AE Wilsons?

  • I guess the Fahg will be too small for me because in winter maybe I'm going to ride with a MTB.
Would you say the Abus Extreme 59 is worth the price of 50 € more compared to the M18?

  • No one you know have a fagh you can try? Or go in to evans and test one out, be the best bet.

  • ive just seen a abus granit london .

I dont know how it compares to the granit 54 but it has same diametre shackle and parabolic shape.
