Ian Hibell rode 100's of Thousands of miles around the world in very tough conditions. He used a traditional leather saddle yet I dont think he wore any form of cycle specific shorts at all. Let alone £100 ones.
Do you *need *£90+ cycle shorts to ride in comfort from London to Paris?
No.
It might help, but I think being comfortable on a bike is a lot more to do with how physique, posture, bike setup, attitude and experience riding.
He probably has a gooch like a Rhinoceros's arse cheek too.
For once why don't you shut up and listen as lots of experienced long distance cyclists on here, who have ridden for day after day after day in all sorts of weather do think that investing in a decent pair of shorts, and it is an investment as I've got Assos shorts that are 6 years old and still used regularly, will make the trip that bit more pleasant.
And for what it's worth, there are one thousand of these blokes who ride day in day out for a living and they invest in decent shorts too.

I like Fizik saddles. Arione is my choice.
Shorts and saddles are really personal choice though and whats good for one is not for another Im afraid.
Chamois cream is important... -

gooch
The Arione is worth a shot though as the chances are it would be comfortable for you as it does seem to be pretty popular, not sure if a majority view exactly but not a bad bet.
