  • Spray a massive ring around the whole of New Oxford Street. Worst patch of road in Central London. That bit of road can fuck the fuck off.

  • thanks for the fill that hole site... Should come in handy!

I'd vote for Borough High St. The bit that runs from the end of London Bridge to Neington Causeway is just plain shocking.

  • most of london suprises me. the roads would be better in the 3rd world! c'mon london. you can do better.

  • +1 but PLEASE report them! If you don't, maybe someone else won't as well.

Someone's beaten me to it. There is a description already there!

I reckon if multiple complaints appear for one hole it's more likely something will be done. Report it anyway if you didn't.

From Grays Inn road west along Holborn for about 200 yards is starting to DO MY HEAD IN. I which there was a giant flag to put in that bit on fillthathole.

  • Just to add my two penneth worth on the fillthathole site.

It's a one stop shop for all councils so you don't need to look up a different address for each pothole in a new borough.
They pass the details on pretty quickly. I reported a nasty pothole and within 24-36 hours it was filled.

  • dicki - you're absolutely spot on. All the road works appear this month as the councils depsperately spend all their budget to ensure thay get it again next year.

    It's a shambles.

  • Furry boot town, lovely. I hear you have some lovely oil up your way. I'm studying mechanical engineering at Heriot Watt and they make it seem like Oil is the only way to go.

Yeah it's Oil or nothing, pardon the pun. I work in IT for an Oil company - although I would rather work in a different industry, and would love to move to Embra - Aberdeen is just a big town with money - Edinburgh is a nice city with culture. Aberdonians think culture starts and ends with a modified Impreza turbo sigh

  • vehicles fuck the roads, bikes dont, so who are the guilty ones here?
if youre about with a can do it at night, fri, sat, when the very few beat police around and they too busy to bother you.
and yes, these necessary repairs come out of general taxation-so whilst the petrol heads pay more for the pleasure of atrophying in jams we all pay the same for road improvements

  • I pick up tomorrow. I start over the weekend ;)

  • if youre about with a can do it at night, fri, sat, when the very few beat police around and they too busy to bother you.

Yes, you need a 'can do' attitude. ;)

  • Also, if you spray round the hole in the colour the local authority uses, and someone has an accident as a result of the hole, before it gets filled, the local authority will find it very hard to deny liability. Basically, they're liable if they're aware of the hole, and if their rolling checks weren't reasonable. If there's a bloody great circle of highway paint round the hole, they'll have trouble denying it. A family member is head of highways for a large county, and spends his days in court explaining the inspection schedule when people are suing...

This is not legal advice, and should not be acted upon ;)

  • No, all you need is this:

    http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/roadusers/reportastreetfault/newfault.aspx

It's a one-stop shop. TfL pass the details on to the local highway authorities. Works very well.

(Tsk, tsk, TB, short memory? ;) )

I used this recently to report that massive crater at New Oxford St/Museum St, and I noticed it's been filled now.

I described it as a bad accident waiting to happen - if my report was what got it sorted, it leaves me wondering whether TFL's motivation is fear of accidents, or fear of litigation.

Either way, who cares. The road's a bit safer now.

  • What part of scotland are you in? I'm in edinburgh and some of the roads are shocking.

    Yes!

I mainly ride on the southside or old town-- either way the roads are shocking. The drivers are not much better either!

    Good. Well done.

Under the Highways Act 1980, highway authorities have a duty to maintain all public highways under their control, and a general duty of care to maintain the highway 'in a condition fit for purpose'.

  • Litigation then ;)

  • Litigation then ;)

;) noted, but just to be boring for a moment: Or indeed a positive commitment to fulfilling their responsibilities with very stretched resources. But the quality of the work does vary from authority to authority. For instance, we were riding in West Sussex on Saturday/Sunday night, where the carriageway surfacing on the lanes we took was so poor that (I only discovered last night) my front light fitting broke. Admittedly, they're just lanes, but the authority could probably do better there.

Oh, and of course no highway authority wants there to be more crashes on their network, but again you don't have to interpret that as just a reactive fear. It's just that local authorities are so under-resourced that it's really impossible to keep up with maintenance as well as they would wish to.

  • They filled my hole!

It almost seems accidental... They were re-surfacing the bus stop road section (as they seem to be doing all over the city for no reason whatsoever) and they look like they've just chucked a bit of the left over mac in the pothole. Good for me, although there is another pothole about 3 feet along from it!

  • With a bit of perseverance you can zoom in pretty close using Google Street View, then hit the link button and e-mail the co-ordinates. Might be a useful reporting tool. The ones near me are still gonna get sprayed though, when the builders merchants get road marking spray back in stock

Might that not be confusing if Street View doesn't show the actual pothole (the views being generally quite a bit out of date, as I understand it)?

I find it's usually enough to say 'outside number x' etc. They'll find it.

Then I must have some really old pot holes near by - which makes sense actually as some of them are so big, I swear I see whole gangs of precious metal prospectors climbing out of 'em......

Then be careful about reporting the potholes. People can get touchy about lucrative industries being threatened.

  • Someone just came off his bike because of this one.
