"Oh Shit" moments...

  • There's this big long dual carriage-way in Plymouth with a cycle path and loads of left hand turns into roads/garages. Today I was on said cycle path and a car pulls left into said garage. I was 10 meters behind him when I saw him indicate. Couple of seconds later I was on the floor with 5 people stood around me. Luckily I glanced off and went a tumbling. We both agreed it was mutual accident - turns out he was a cop off duty. Superficial grazing, sprained wrist, one finger now larger than others, minor damage to bike. In a weird way I feel kind of happy I've had a crash and that it wasn't a lorry.

  • Just to add it's one of those cycle paths on the road that's about 1 meter wide and cuts out every 500 meters.

  • Why not ride on the road?

I'm a bit confused: Did he not check his mirrors before turning?
Or were you accidentally moving from behind him to the inside of him?

So far all the near left-turns I've seen on my Manfriend were not his fault at all. Either way good you are OK!

Neighbor of a colleague of mine got crushed under lorry for 6 hours, not clear yet who was at fault but looking to end up with stoma etc. Bit pissed off over it due to all the bad driving I see every day...police is involved.

  • Surely if he has turned across your path then he is at fault, whether he is indicating or not?

  • Why not ride on the road?

I was on the road, it's just one of those painted bits of road like the cycle superhighway. I might be getting my nomenclature mixed up.

  • Glad you're ok

At some stage, I'm guessing that the car must have overtaken him too.

I think you are probably right now I have thought about it. TBF the guy was very apologetic, gave me a lift home and offered to pay for any damaged on the bike (he was also a cyclist) but nothing mechanical was broken or bent so my reaction was just to say forget about it. Don't know if I should of done anything differently?

He overtook me about 500 meters previously (he said afterwards he saw me) - then further along the traffic slowed down - I undertook 1 car (still on the cycle path painted section) and was just about to undertake him when I saw his indicator come on, then turn, then bang.

  • Technically, it's 100% his fault for not checking his left before turning, his insurance should be able to cover the damage to you and your bicycle thankfully.

However, it's quite risky undertaking traffic, it is highly recommended to filter on the outside rather.

  • Wait, he didn't check his Mirrors before making a very brief Signal and Manouvering?

    Bang to rights!

  • As to what you should have done differently afterwards, I don't think anything much. If the damage is not severe, the driver is suitably apologetic, and you are reasonably confident that they will learn from it then there is probably not a lot to be gained from pursuing it further.

I fully agree I rarely undertake for this reason (I never undertake vans or lorries full stop). But it's very difficult to start overtaking on a road like this where in the inside lane is moving relatively slow (and constantly changing speed) while the outside lane is still moving fast.

  • I understand, the best scenario would be to wait for an opening and be assertive, if you however insist on riding on the inside, it's best to ride at a speed allowing you to come to an emergency stop should such manoeuvre occurred again.

Hope you can fix your bicycle.

  • ...(he was also a cyclist)...

Not picking on you sandbag. Why does this seem to make things 'ok'? Why do people mention it? If you knock over a pedestrian do you say "oh, sorry. I'm a pedestrian too by the way".

Who cares if they ride a bike. They're still absent minded enough to knock you off.

6 hours and he survived?! Where will the stoma be? Hopefully he can learn to live with it and have some quality of life again soon.

a driver who's a cyclist will have damn well checked the left mirror before manoeuvring

  • Or would possibly be the type to feature on the bad cyclist thread!

  • I can't get angry with drivers who apologise profusely for almost knocking me off my bike: the fear in their eyes breaks my heart a little.

Sandbag - are we talking about the A38 coming in past Plympton here?

  • I can however get angry if they don't provided me the necessary details after a collusion.

  • ... for how can one collude without sharing information?

  • bee/wasp flew into my mouth whilst I was heading down coombe lane in kingston at serious speed. not fun. my lips all swollen :(

  • Cheaper than collagen injections

  • That moment when you splash hot olive oil on your arm, and wipe away your skin trying to get it off...
