  • Oh dear...

    :P

    Sorreh?

  • What do all of you people with dogs do during the day? Do you all work at home most of the time? This is the thing that puts me off having a dog. I'd love one but don't think it's fair to have it locked up for 10hr a day every day.

I work from home 95% of the time. But i always try and go out for at least an hour without my dog. He's fine for about 8 hours, thankfully he doesn't seem to display much anxiety. When I work for clients I do only a 6hr shift or if i will be longer he either comes with me.

I keep him to a pretty strict schedule 8.20 am we go for first walk. 9am food. 12noon grooming and my break (so play in garden) 8.-8.30pm walk again. He puts himself to bed about 9pm.

I chose Greyhounds because of the overall character of the breed. I chose a retired racer because I didn't want months of "Puppy Puddles / Chewed Shoes etc.," The breed is low energy and they sleep a lot and so two short walks is enough.

I chose my dog because I knew I wanted a quiet, submissive and gentle animal who could be around kids, already walked nicely on a lead and could come to my office if I ever had one again. Dara is all of those things, he's also HUGE (much bigger than the average Greyhound) and bin liner black - which I quite like now but is very unpopular with the general pubic or at least the people who come to the kennel.

I would personally never leave a dog for eight or nine hours. They are social beasts. I grew up always having two or three at any one time, and in my experience –big dogs that need a lot of activity – it's not really on. I want a dog more than anything, but until I have a garden, near a big park or field, and the time to walk it three times a day, I won't get one.

i've just bought my own business so he just hangs out in the basement office with me, to be fair he pretty much sleeps through a lot of the day anyway but it's nice that if i want to take him to the park or share an ice cream with him or whatever i can.
i got a small dog because i knew that i couldn't devote 2 x hour walks x every single day x 10 plus years. i like that i can take ludd pretty much anywhere. today i went to franco manca and he just came inside and sat under the table, i couldn't do that with a lab.

i wasn't working when i got ludd as a puppy because i knew he would require a lot of attention and it's not good to leave them for big stretchs at a time when they're little, i can understand why that would mess then up. a woman i meet occasionally walking the dog just got a 8/10 week old staff and then just leaves it at home for 8 hours a day, she couldn't understand why the vet was narked when she told him about what she was doing.

your or Jackys' situation is the type I'd like to be in. Most of the time able to have the dog hang around me even if it's not doing anything much. I'm fucking waste of space so I can't see this happening for a while unfortunately.

  • saying that before i left i had a job where one of the girls in the office brought her dog in, if him and ludd had gotten on i would have been allowed to take him in with me too, i imagine. it all just depends on yr situation. obviously if you've got a super corporate job then it's probably not going to happen but i've been to estate agents, coffee shops etc that have all had dogs.

  • fucking amazing, just as i typed that the news just showed some thing about PET AIRWAYS.
    100% googling.

  • do any of you dog owners do a raw diet? I started my dog on it today. Tripe REALLY stinks. Happily it stays sealed until I give it to him (outside). He aslo got Rabbit and chicken today, which didn't stink. 800g of meat, gone in about 10mins.

  • Be careful, I put my cat on the rawhide diet and it has not gone well.

  • ^HAHAHAHA! that cat looks amazing.

  • @ seldom - that picture rocks!

I've been reading up on the percentages of meat vs. veg and I think I understand it.
@ Ross, PET AIRWAYS looks great. disapointed that it's not you and the pet though!

  • oh my god, it's true. My cats ARE rubbish.

no way! your cats are ace.

unfortunately i don't have any picture or video of when she had socks on. hehe. i do have a hilarious video of her chasing jim up and down the corridor, then biting him when he went to stroke her! hahaha.

  • LeiFu is SO CUTE!!!

his didn't look like that before, my dad rescued him from a rather immoral owner who cut off his vocal (don't know what it call in English, but the part that allows the dog to bark), chained him up in industrial metal chains and he had worms in his heart (eating him from inside) and a rather bad degree of skin decease.
Poor LeiFu, but his in a loving home now and we manage to cure all his illness now.

  • cute!

  • Not my pet pet but very cute!!
