Which was doubtless a very lovely thing to do- but my issue with that is that James (my cat) would then expect all rails to have grip-tape on them, potentially leading to a fall somewhere else.
I'd rather he accepted that he might fall off, and temper any future exploits with that knowledge.
An excellent example of risk compensation theory in practice.

On the coach back from Lincoln, got a text from mrs_com-in-law yesterday, Jelly has returned!!!
Result!
Great news. The little buggers do love to make us suffer.
Yay!
Fantastic news.
That's great, glad to hear that Jelly has returned.
James approves:
mrs_com-in-law said she had locked the cat flap to stop her running away. got in about an hour ago and found she had set it to only let them out and keep them out, and had left the back door unlocked.
thankfully, they were just howling outside and all our possessions appear to be present and correct.

Should be fine. Cats can in theory survive being thrown out of a plane. It's all about terminal velocity... QI taught me this.
How does this help a cat falling from high stories? One important physical attribute that domestic cats have is that they are light. A domestic cat at terminal velocity during a free fall is considerably less heavy than a man. In addition, when a cat falls from higher levels it would have more time to complete re-orientation from the righting reflex in preparation to land, than if it fell from a lower level. After it has re-oriented itself and if it had the opportunity to reach free falling at terminal velocity, it will also start to splay its legs, adding to the drag which helps to slow it down. During free fall, it would also start to relax, which causes them to suffer less injuries than if they experienced impact with tensed muscles (think about keeping your knees and legs rigidly straight and falling from a distance).

They look pretty funny in zero gravity though

We may be having to rehome this little lass. Long story short, mrs_com's sister is a 20 year old child who whined until she got a kitten for her birthday this year (I had my misgivings from the start but gave her the benefit of the doubt). Needless to say she is blatantly refusing to look after her and mrs_com's mother is too busy working and raising her other child (an actual 6 year old child - who often shows more maturity than the 20 year old) to be fair to this little fluff ball.
She is a mix but mainly English Blue (I think), less than a year old. Chipped, spayed and vaccinated (at mrs_com-in-law's expense, another gripe of mine but that's another story). We have toyed with the idea of having 3 cats but I think it's a stretch too far and she doesn't seem to warming to our pair. We don't really have the space or time for prolonged quarantine etc so there are just stand-offs at the minute.
Other than that, she is VERY affectionate. Purry, loves people. Litter trained. Quiet.
Also, any potential saviour would have their very own version of the original I CAN HAZ CHEEZBURGER? cat!
mrs_com doesn't want to rehome straight away, preferring to wait until she gets a reaction from her sister (I don't think she's been home yet so I don't know how in the hell she thinks the cat is being looked after. as far as she knows, she left the cat locked in her room 48 hours ago and has been out with her mates since, we took the cat home to ours last night).
Anyway, what do you reckon?

Well, that said I'll need to check with Fenella- how about we look after her for the weekend, see how we/she get on?

You can then see if the sister wants the mog back on Monday.

i will check with L when she gets back from her feminist choir practise.
(you think I'm joking? it's called LIPS - seriously)
that would be great. Our cats are being very good, jelly comes in to eat but then fucks off when she sees her. Mogget just mostly sits and stares at her, only hissing when she hisses right in his fat face. She just seems to be very scared of other cats but her otherwise brilliant temperament makes me think she would eventually calm down. She's currently hurtling around the living room while the other two are out so their smell doesn't freak her out.
We are currently allowing her free run of the hallway and bathroom at night with the other two having the livingroom, kitchen and outside world via the catflap. works fine for now as she doesn't howl in the night like Jelly used to but it's not ideal long term.

Stevo, the cheezburger cat, does she go outside? Well, can she go outside and be reliably trusted to return?
(sumo if you are reading this...er, it's just a curious question! Definitely, definitely not considering it)

Condolences about the daughter. Lovely cat though. I wouldve loved to have had it, but we took in a stray that has become very much at home.
That said the cat still fell 4 floors... Into a bush..
