  • I can probably do those dates too, and it would make travel a bit easier, though there are worse things to than wander around Paris.......

Will make a few more checks.

Hmmm, would deffo be easier to do early Sept and just book one ticket via Eurostar, see what the Yorkshire crew reckon. If they're OK with it we should go for it.

You OK with a Saturday - Wednesday trip ?

  • seth can do it!!! just spoke to him.. not sure about the others but he was the only definite anyway..do we need to book asap?

  • so details are:

MCR Ride Mont Ventoux... Leave Saturday 5th September Return Wednesday 9th September

Prices: Ticket to London approx £8, Eurostar is £109 return to Avignon

If you want to go get in touch BEFORE THIS SUNDAY so we can book it (tickets are nearly sold out)

that right? was it that one that tickets are already on sale for???should we worry?

I guess we need to find a cheap place to stay now...

  • Hmmm, even if we book before we still have to make our own way from Gare du Nord to Gare du Lyon (by rail or cab). However, a possible itnierary is: -

    5/9/09 - Manc to London Euston - Dep 08:55 Arr 11:04

              Walk to St Pancras
St Pancras to Avignon - Dep 12:29 Arr 19:26 (Includes 50 min changeover time in Paris or there's an opportunity to get a train with a 80 min changeover and arr Avignon at 19:56)

9/9/09 - Avignon to London St Pancras - Dep 12:38 Arr 18:34 (50 min changeover in Paris)

London Euston to Manc - Dep whenever.

Costs - Manc - London return = £66.10 (cheap tickers have disappeared

Eurostar to Avignon - £109 return, need to book ASAP IMO.

  • @Manc Ronnie - look into changing at Lille rather than Paris. It's much easier.

  • wanna go the later date after all then???

  • @ NES - I'll check was looking at TGV tickets but cheap ones never seemed to be available.

    Cheers Andy P wil investigate.

Also investigating cheaper options to London, mat elives down there and was zipping up and down at weekends for football matches for buttons.

  • cool, charlie is asking questions, are we deffo saying that week or shall we see about costs for the later one?

  • I'd prefer later, but not all that bothered. We need to get a consensus of who wants what and decide. We should book Eurostar ASAP, the only annoying thing is that SNCF will not allow you to check tickets beyond 90 days in advance. So I can't check if cheapish tickets will definitely be available to Avignon. It will definitely be no cheaper than £109 return I reckon.

Makes it likely the earlier trip will be best, returns to Avignon sorted will be good. We'll leave the London train until later as £66.10 is standard price, and we can look out for cheaper options, though we'll deffo be paying £33.05 from London to Manc, it;d be bice to save £20 or so on the journey down.

Bike bags and wheel bags look the best bet for luggage, or it's £20 each way in the equivalent of a guards van.

Accommodation best sorted nearer the date I reckon.

  • Ok decent news on the train to London front, cheap tickets are only announced 12 weeks before the date so June 20th ish should see us looking to book.

That date counts us out of the Manchester 100, but maybe we can do that in October ourselves, a mate is doing it, so I'll get him to get a route map or something.

So looking at August 8th, £8 singles to London are available on the 08:55, and we should be looking at £28 to come back on the Wednesday, which is fair enough.

  • just sent a message to charlie and seth and zero to see what they think. is wayne coming? is he away? what dates are you actually proposing, i'm a bit confused now...x x x

ace work by the way x

  • Proposing Sept 5th or 19th, 5th is prob easier for Eurostar, either way we should be getting to London for £8 and return for £28 which is pretty cheap. Unless anyone has issues with it, shall we make it 5th. Then we can start booking, can you text Wayne and see if he's up for it ?

  • i already texted him!

  • Oh and I don't know what Seth was planning, but he'd be best to come over to Manc as these cheap tickets are Virgin trains only, and it's gonna cost him a lot more to go from Leeds.

So fair play to the beardy publicity obsessed git (Branson I mean not Seth)

  • he was talking to me about branson this morning, something about how he earns a million quid a minute or something..the virgin train people wouldn't let me on the train with my bike...

i think he (seth not branson) is planning to stay at mine before anyway so can totally leave from MCR...we are thinking of staying a few days longer out there but not sure yet...i guess we'll need to decide asap. so 5th it is then? am WELL excited.

i read this quote earlier though...

"then the road goes up at around 10% and immediately it hurts and immediately you know that it has barely begun and that you're already in serious, serious bother, that you don't have any more gears"

    eeeeekk

we are gonna do the Peak Challenge though, Seth reckons Ventoux will be good training for it..hahahaha imagine the Ventoux being training..Oh. my. god.

    http://www.kilotogo.com/index.php?option=event_detail&event_id=6

we should do it as an ibikemcrventoux team...esp if ste designs us those jerseys....

  • That looks tough but not as bad as the Polka Dot Challenge, I'll be walking up Winnats as usual if I do it.

Seth may wish to try this for training while he's over there: -

    From Wikipedia on Mt Ventoux

Every year there are amateur races to try and climb the mountain as quickly and as often as possible in 24 hours, the Ventoux Masterseries. On May 16 2006 Jean-Pascal Roux from Bedoin broke the record of climbs in 24 hours, with eleven climbs, all of them from Bedoin.

  • hahahahahahhahaa he shall laugh when he reads that..don't get me wrong he isn't being blase about it all, simply excited about the suffering!

i think we should try to do winnats before we do ventoux if possible...we need to find a longish hill that's near to 10%

  • Winnats is 25%+ and short other options are: -

Glossop - Snake Pass - Edale and climb out of Hope Valley that way. Edale hill = 25%.

Nearest you'll get to something like the Ventoux is Holme Moss from the hard side so: -

Stalybridge - the moors - Holmfirth - Holme Moss - Glossop - Home.

  • so me, Ronnie and seth are all fecking booked and defo gonna do this shit...

here are the details in case anyone else wants to come:

    Saturday 5th September

    (virgin trains cheap tickets)
    Depart MCR 9.35
    Arrive London 11.42

    (eurostar)
    Depart London 12.57
    Arrive Avignon 20.10

Ronnie is coming back on wednesday 9 sept at 12.38

Me and Seth are coming back Sunday 13th Sept at 12.38

    total cost was £145 each

I am SO SO SO excited....it will be ace..come come come!!!

  • Nearest you'll get to something like the Ventoux is Holme Moss from the hard side

It's the best we've probably got in this country, but nothing much can prepare you for the Alps or Pyranees. Having said that, the kilotogo Peaks ride looks pretty fearsome.

    Holme Moss:

    Ventoux:

    Climbybike.com is awesome.

  • You over Saturday mate, 10am start BTW.

  • Yeah will be. 10am at Unicorn?? My knees aren't thanking me after recent weeks of hilly miles. Cat and Fiddle is pretty steady so should be ok. Just have to take it easy getting back out of Buxton.

  • Just a quick hijack, i'm out at ventoux for the tour this year.. fancied having a pop at it if i can rent a half decent bike from somewhere in the area? anyone know if this is possible. oh and i will have come directly from four nights at benicassim festival... pure folly?

Yep 10am Unicorn, we'll probably avoid the Goyt Valley this time, and the climb out of Buxton on the A5004 isn't too bad....

Folly ? Probably. Be a shame to be over there and not give it a try.
