  • @coachhouse I'm a newbie to velodrome riding, if I was looking to start riding at HHV which session would I be looking at, and what kit do I need to wear/bring with me? Thanks in advance

  • stuff like bike specs, tyres, shoe-pedal combos etc

  • First go to induction, then they will direct you to the track skills session that you don't need accreditation for.

Use the bikes at HHV, but there are specs on the site for what's allowed.

Recommend you wear comfortable clothes for induction, and proper cycling kit for track skills.

  • Thanks @pdlouche, I've just checked the website so I'll double check the height of my BB on my Mataro to see if it's allowed or not (I prefer running clipped rather than strapped, more security and it's better for my knees) and if it isn't, then I guess I'll just have to hire a bike

  • They actually have bb height restrictions at HH?
Considering many top riders have used up to 180 cranks at indoor velodromes (I believe Mr Hoy rides 170) I wouldn't think it was an issue. The chances of pedal strike are pretty much non existant at HH I would think especially as that archaic rule was made in the days of wider pedals.

  • From the HHV website:
The rise in popularity of fixed-wheel bikes now means many people may own one for use on the road. To make it track legal it must adhere to certain standards:

It must have a fixed wheel drivetrain
Frame must have a bottom bracket height of at least 265mm (from ground to centre) when using 165mm cranks (more if using longer cranks
If frame has braze-ons or fittings they must be padded and taped over to avoid injury
It must have no brakes or extraneous parts (this includes the entire brake assembly, bottle cages, lights & brackets etc)
    It must have Drop handlebars
Handlebars must be fitted with bar-end plugs and bartape or grips
Tyres must be in good condition and pumped up hard
Pedals should provide adequate foot retention (clips and straps or clipless pedals set to a high tension)
Wheel axles should be of the nutted type (no quick-release skewers)
Gearing should be between 82 and 88 gear inches for novice riders. (48 x 15 (86″) is ideal for adult riders) a slightly higher ratio around 88-90 gear inches is preferred for racing.

  • Yeah, that's what I read @youramericanlover, mines at 285 with a 170mm crank, do you guys reckon that'd be allowed? I've also got road pedals and drop bars and whatnot, I just thought I'd check before heading over there when I can

  • If it's a proper track bike you'll be fine.

  • 285mm - 170mm = 15mm more clearance than the example @youramericanlover posted.

  • That's awesome, thanks for all the help guys, you're all rad

  • Moving back to London soon, looking forward to getting back out for these sessions!

  • So the summer schedule is back, but I can't see the induction sessions (or any of them) on the riderhq site to book onto. Is it a case of just turning up to these, like it used to be?

  • ninja edit: I'm an idiot

  • Hmm, ok. So what's happening this saturday then? No induction session at all or worth turning up to see what's going on?

  • As far as I'm aware the first induction you can just turn up to (that's what I did last summer) and they run every Saturday after the track skills session. It's the accreditations you need to book through Rider HQ.

The website just says to get there at 12:30 to sign on and sort a bike out.

  • Saturday inductions from 1pm 'til 2pm do not require prior booking. Accreditations (training and racing) require booking on line in advance. All info on website.

  • yeah sorry, I'm being an idiot. that's for skills and racing accreditation like @CalAmor said. Just turn up to the induction sessions and then afterwards go to as many track skills as you'd like. sorry for the confusion.

  • No worries, thanks to everyone for clarifying. There's my saturday afternoon sorted then! :)

  • Does anyone have a copy of the email from HHV regarding the bike storage payment? I can't find it and need to pay

    Ta!

  • Here you go!

    Hi everyone,

  • Hmm, tried that but the 2016 PayPal link doesn't open. Can someone PM me the address the email came from (didn't receive it directly).

    Cheers,
    Andrew

  • Dumps sent you a PM with the likely contact. Tim

  • Hiya. I didn't get the emails out my hook either and also that link doesn't work. Please could you send me the details too? Cheers.

  • Celeste emailed me yesterday so the link worked and I paid
