  • Whatever, granddad.

  • How often are people turned away from the basic session?

  • Whenever a safe rider limit is exceeded.

  • How often are people turned away from the basic session?

  • I don't think there are records kept on who doesn't get to ride, but it's not something that happens that often.

Perhaps you'd like to elaborate on whatever point it is you are trying to make?

  • There are clearly pressures on numbers, both in terms of coaches being able to control and communicate what everyone is supposed to be doing, and I guess purely in terms of the number of hire bikes available. (Haven't people been turned away already because they've got nothing to ride on??) So if people are hanging around after the intermediate session to get more track time, IMO this is indeed a little inconsiderate given the high demand for newbies wishing to progress. (Especially if they're keeping their arm band and getting a freebie, although I wouldn't know if this is happening!)

  • whatever point it is you are trying to make

I'm not trying to make any point. I was asking a clear question that I hoped would elicit a factual answer.

As your initial answer dealt with the circumstances under which an event would arise, rather than the frequency of such an event, I thought it was worth restating the question.

  • Hi, so i'm thinking of doing the induction session next weekend but have NO experience on a track... I know thats the point of the induction, but any tips for a first timer would be much appreciated.

  • Wear something you're comfortable riding in, listen to what the coaches are asking you to do and pay attention to things happening around you. Do what you're told. Keep pedalling.

  • You forgot. Smile and enjoy yourself.

  • Both of those are forbidden. Serious business.

  • Out this week guys and girls, fixing the ho-mobile and getting my new frame... XD

  • Which one? L or G (or C?)

  • . (Especially if they're keeping their arm band and getting a freebie, although I wouldn't know if this is happening!)

Anyone doing that will be found out. And they will not be welcome back.

  • G, C is coming in 2 months for the keirin =p

  • you'd better get some training in then....
    And some proper wheels.

  • really need to get some training wheels....

  • Finally got it together to get to the induction this afternoon. It was a great session and I really enjoyed it, looking forward to attending the basic training next week.

Disappointed to see the guy in sunglasses with a hire bike from the induction sneak into basic training as well, right after being told that we couldn't. The same guy who, when told not to cross the track in front of the intermediate riders, said 'but I'm doing the induction'. If that's how good he is at listening to the coaches, he's probably already taken someone out by now.

Also good to meet you V-L, and hear your disc.

  • Lovely day out there today. Good to see you Tommmmmm. And many thanks to the coaches.

  • Had a great time on the basic this afternoon, many thanks to the coaches for a safe and fun session.
Major props to the 12 yr old girl who dealt brilliantly with my patronising attempt to be encouraging "I've been coming every Friday for a year you know..." by dropping most of the group and hanging on till the last 15 laps, taking one lap out and trying again! She was a monster and offered no form of drafting possibilities:-( Very impressive:-)

It was brilliant fun, back next week for sure (weather permitting...)

  • Wear something you're comfortable riding in, listen to what the coaches are asking you to do and pay attention to things happening around you. Do what you're told. Keep pedalling.

Are long sleeves/tights a good idea? At the moment I'm finding shorts and a t-shirt too warm during the day!

Also any recommendations regarding shoes? I've never ridden clips/straps and it seems a bit strange to ride over in stiff SPDs then change into something less effective.

  • wear something you're comfortable in. if you're comfortable in long sleeves/tights in this weather then go for it. I'd aim to be wearing a little less.
They let you put your own pedals on the hire bikes, so take a pedal spanner/suitable allen key and you won't have to change out of your spds.

  • Great, thanks!

  • One final question... How much does the induction cost!? Sure the website says somewhere but I couldn't find it!

  • £6 I think.
