Sorry my question wasn't clear: this is an application for smart phones, I get this much, but what does it do?

Whatever is using the API is using it to tell people how many Barclays Hire Bikes are available at a given location, and also how many spaces are available. Also it can be used to show a map of available locations, and stuff like saying "Try this, if not this one here is the next closest.".
It could be an iPhone or Android app, and it's likely it is. But it could also be that someone has made a web app showing this stuff.
Because I like privacy and performance, LFGSS doesn't log requests and doesn't keep records of these things. So I honestly couldn't tell you what is using it... just that something is (I have performance counters... but all they do is count).

TFL haven't put live cycle hire data feeds on their website yet that people can just plug into and use so people are taking the data from the live TFL hire map using the page source code which you can get the data from. I believe DK has witten code that scrapes the data, converts it into that API which anyone can then plug into their own app and use.
The app i have puts a little widget with three closet locations with distance and a compass pointing to it and the colour indicating good/bad/so-so in terms of bikes and slots available.

I'm experiencing loads of 'breaks', pretty much every time I change page/thread, for the past hour...

You need to start logging the requests (it's just a tfl feed anyway, not the forum) and then you can pin down if there is in fact any abuse/poor coding or if it's just popular.

i don't know what that means. i'm talking about the "server is really busy atm" messages.

For about the last week/10 days at around 4.30/5pm I keep getting this:
MessageThe server seems to be really busy at the moment, I can only apologise and as soon as you let me know this is happening I'll do something about it.
*Alternatively you can let me know at *david@londonfgss.com
As for what to do, perhaps a cup of tea would help pass the time until it's all working again -

Not you, VB. If VB was logging the requests he could tell what was hammering the server.

Hmm, I'm getting an odd thing today where the Names and Faces thread seems to want to automamamatically reload itself all the time. Is it just me?
I was just in the moderators thread and linked through to the one below and it just constantly refreshes.

This pleases me :D

I've noticed two cases of this ^^ too, a post repeated twice about 50 minutes apart.....odd
Absolutely. And I don't mind that at all.
What I mind is if one app is just badly written and that's why there are so many requests.
Not that it affects me deeply, this flaw was on my side in the updating of the cache. It wouldn't have shown itself without serious load on the server, but it's definitely my flaw... even though I suspect someone's shit app is why it's been discovered.
