Bit of warning that the ride from Shoreham to hove isn't too pretty - fairly industrial past the power station, there's a little footbridge which takes you over the harbour and get's you nearer the sea
it's the unmarked road on the map. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Shoreham-by-sea,+Sussex&sll=50.83155,-0.236324&sspn=0.002927,0.006995&ie=UTF8&ll=50.831963,-0.238609&spn=0.011709,0.027981&z=15
Once you get to Hove though with the beach huts and lawns at that time of the morning that should be really nice ride, if there's a cafe on the seafront in central brighton called buddies that should be open too

Tell me how it goes today, and I may be in for the overnighter.
The Ti bike needs more riding, but I must find some bullhorns- 22.2 diameter anyone?
The drops are just useless without hoods. -

I'm very impressed with Mick's hunger for the miles. Good work dude.
Wonderfully set out ride Oliver, I would love to come but planning a long ride on Sunday morning.

Don't be impressed just yet, I kinda slept in for it, again...
Oh well, nice day, good day to go out and get lost in London.

How much does the train fare from Brighton-London cost?
I'd be keen for this ride but have limited funds (coming to the end of this terms student loan)
-
• #58
Think it's about £20

• #59
thought as much and not really sure why I asked, any amount would be too much considering my tight budgeting at the moment.. I'm going to have to pass on this ride unfortunately.. Have a great one guys

Sorry not to see you, Michael, but I'm afraid I'll have to neg com you for this one. :)
I've never neg commed anyone, ever, but now's the time, he, he, he, he.
I'm sure you'll agree that it's entirely justified. :D

Went well, Des and I had a nice old recce. We only did something like 40 miles or so (as unlike Michael, we didn't have to offset a huge burden of guilt. ;) ) We trained it out to Redhill (next to Reigate) and took Richard's route out of Reigate, then some variations of my own devising and found quite a good way to go. The only part of the route that I'm not happy with yet is around Horsham, and I think on the night we'll just take the bit that we didn't actually recce, as that should work fine. Only went off course once by turning the wrong way into Rusper Road but got back on track quickly.
The bit between Reigate and Shoreham is really nice--mostly small lanes through some places that looked beautiful even in the fairly indifferent weather we had earlier before the sun came out. A couple of small hills and a bit of up and down, but nothing unmanageable. Had a pint in Upper Beeding before heading down to Shoreham, where we did some sightseeing of the Old Fort. The really frustrating thing was that we only got to Brighton station after 4, and were refused access to the platform by the jobsworth on the gate. I'd heard of the repressive carriage policy before, but to not allow bikes on Brighton-London is completely ridiculous, especially on a fast train that only calls at East Croydon and Clapham Junction! None of the other Southern Trains staff seemed to care about observing it, so we rode to Hove (five minutes) and got on another train there. This cost us half an hour. I'm still seething with anger at this stupid nonsense.
But, yeah, we've got a nice route together. Trains on the weekend will be fine (no engineering works, no bike bans). Should be about 70 miles. Up to Reigate we'll do the same route as last time, then we'll do Richard's bit via Leigh to Charlwood, then do a bit of a detour to call at Gatwick again, then back to Charlwood on the genuinely new bit of the ride. Looking forward to it!

Do I get a positive one for buying myself a proper light today for the Brighton run?
Out of my non-existant student money? =P

Correct--it's a tenner. However, the machine doesn't tell you that--Des has a Network Railcard and in both cases (the earlier Brighton recce and now this one) when we had to get back from Brighton, he had to get the tickets in the ticket office. I suspect that even if you don't have a Network Railcard, you still have to get your ticket from the ticket office.

Nice ride again Oliver, even if I couldn't quite keep up. Will make a good overnighter. As you say no major hills, but my legs tell me we racked up a bit of climbing overall. 68/70 GI is fine in case anyone is wondering. You've picked your day well: 18mph headwind on Friday night, 10mph tailwind for Saturday. I'm seriously considering gears.
Complete twat of a guard at Brighton, he enjoyed turning us away. But fair play the guy who changed the tickets and thought it was daft and to the lady at Hove who gave us the nod through the gate even if it was against policy. Have a good ride Saturday, I'll make the next one.

Hi Oliver,
Yes they are annoying. I sometimes have to commute to London and I have been involved in many an altercation with them.
Just FYI, the First Capital Connect (old Thameslink) trains are OK for bikes Brighton to London in the evening rush hour. No bikes on any trains the other way, tho.
ps - I WILL join you soon, once I hit a deadline or two!

Thanks, Max, it is an unbelievably stupid policy. It really angered me and I'll be making some enquiries. It's a good job that other staff were so understanding--they must have got fed up with this bollocks, too. There is no way that a train which is non-stopping until Croydon would get anywhere close to full. And even if they had to have such a policy, they should apply it with discretion. This one's going to run and run.
I'll look out for the Thameslink trains the next time, or will remember to go to Hove straightaway.
Yes, there'll be more rides later in the year, so we'll look forward to you joining us then!

Ha, I didn't notice that conditions on Friday are going to be so adverse. Make sure you peloton up well! NB, everybody, we're talking about another ride Des is doing this Friday, the regular Friday Night Ride to the Coast with Simon Legg. As Des said, Saturday will be a tailwind. I'm looking forward to that! Let's hope the forecast holds. It's looking really good right now.

Cool, see you then!
BTW, I ended up with 70.5 miles on the clock (meaning something like 60 miles for Redhill-Hove), which surprised me, as it seemed to me that we did fewer. But that of course includes getting lost at various times.
Nice one, Richard, I'll have a close look at that tonight.
