Hi,
My housemate just got hold of a raleigh in relatively good working order and wants to convert it to fixed or a single speed. Has anyone got a rear wheel and cranks. And I suppose anything else he'd need for 'the change'.
Thanks -

You are generally removing stuff when going from geared to ss/fixed, the only things I can think of that are ss specific are chainring bolts and chain. Having said that....
What kind of drop outs has the frame got?
If they're vertical it can be tricky to get chain tension without using a singulator type device. "Magic" chain length (a half link chain or even just a few links are useful here) or drilling/grinding a wee bit out of the dropout can work.
What cranks are currently on the bike?
You might be able to remove a couple of chain rings and save yourself the cost of a "dedicated" single speed chainset. Or just run whichever chainring you want, leaving the others on there.
What sort of hub/gear arrangement is on the current rear wheel?
As with the chainring, it's possible to leave all cogs at the back but only use one of them - if you're not running a dérailleur then whatever cog you put the chain on, it stays on. A single speed kit for a cassette rear hub costs about £20, it's just a cog with bigger teeth and some spacers. This lets you adjust the chainline too...

It's got horizontal drop outs, the crank has two or three gears. I need to measure the spacing to be sure as all I know is it's a standard Raleigh road frame 501 tubing. I think ideally he wants to get a flip flop hub but it's all on a budget!
I suppose he just needs cranks and a wheel, then we can start to strip away all the stuff and make it look nice!
Thanks for your reply

Single speed converter will be the cheapest way of converting the rear wheel, and you should be able to use the cranks on there with a little jiggery pokery. A fixed/free wheel will allow you to decide whether or not you want to ride fixed (in Brighton, hills = nice to be able to freewheel/but you're not a cool fixeh skidder) You can pick these up cheap, on here usually for less than £50 (for just a rear) steer clear of the cheap ones knocking around on ebay, the hubs are made of cheese, and you won't save any money than way. You should be able to stuff the wheel in there, steel frames can take a reasonable amount of persuassion, and 501 is nothing to worry about value wise so it should be fine! Keep all the parts you strip, scrub them, list them on ebay and you will probably have enough to do the whole thing for near enough nothing...
Depending how adventurous you want to get, you can put an axle bolt, through a front disc hub, and bolt a sprocket onto it, lace to a rim, and you have a fixed wheel...Velo solo bolt on cogs have a life time warrantee and are about £22.

I reckon he'll go for a rear flip flop but I've sent him this thread so he can have a look. Again, thanks for your help!

Anyone else got a BMX Sprocket lyeing around? Danny gave me one but it is too big to fit in my frame without spacers and I don't wanna ruin my chainline.
Something between 25-32T would be perfect, can pay in $ or beer? -

Paul what size is that in uk, and what size do you normally take?
-
• #524
Well I wear 9/9.5 in shoes and 11/12 in trainers SPD shoes.
46 is supposed to be roughly 11-11.5, but I'd put it at more like a UK size 9/10.
