  • pity they are'nt going to make the ceramics anymore but the cds are superb if you can live with the wearing of the braking surface. been running them on my fixed for a year now, laced to goldtecs with sapim spokes, and i can't fault them. I dont notice a difference in the braking with the surface worn in (swisstop green pads probably help)
like them so much i'll be ripping off prancer's wheelset in the spring and building some chris king/mavic wheels for the road bike, although the rims will be cds and not ceramics. (sorry james)

  • if you can, get some ceramics now and keep them somewhere safe.

CK hubs are awesome - though not the lightest, neither am i so probably quite appropriate.

  • i just got the last 2 ceramic open pros from JE James

  • hmm, don't you think its possible they will introduce their new Exalith surface soon on the open pro? Makes sense for it to filter down in the next few years, perhaps thats why they're filtering out the the ceramics?

  • where to obtain open pro ceramic online please thank you

  • ^ if ordering from Germany is acceptable for you, look here:

  • Has anyone tried their new rims? Lots of panic buying of ceramics but their new ones could be loads better. I'll stick with my cheap uncoated rims either way, just wondering.

  • Chap on the ride yesterday had Cosmics with the new Exalith coating- made a nice "Ziiiiip" noise when he hit the brakes- seemed to stop ok also.

    thanks

  • Is there much difference in quality between the different generations of Open Pro?

I was going to order some of these just because they're a bit cheaper than the current ones:
    http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/open-pro-32-h-silver-32751?currency=3

But then I found these at roughly the same price:

Are the new ones actually an improvement on the older ones, or is it just a different sticker?

  • I've heard say the older ones are better. Better quality raw materials and finish.

  • Cheers mv, I've heard this too... seems odd that they would bother to make things worse instead of better! If anyone can shed light on the specifics then I'm still listening? More out of curiosity than decision making now, tbh.

  • My guess would be firms skimp on costs/materials to maintain a price point, so the later ones could be made with cheaper materials. Am curious, why not something wider like a TB14, at only £9 more each? I was contemplating Open Pros for the Roberts and went with TB14s and am glad I did.

  • I did consider them but TB14s are a bit too wide and heavy for what I have in mind:

    390g vs 490g
    19.6mm vs 23.0mm

    marginal gains, etc ; )

*My checklist was something like this: *

    • light as poss
    • silver
    • 32h / clincher
    • decent braking surface
    • 20ish mm width
    • not too expensive
    • not too ugly (!)

I looked at Omega 19s from Campy Oldy (no breaking surface), Ambrosio Excellight (way too pricy), Ambrosio Evolution (bit too pricy, 100g heavier than open pro), Araya RC-540 (way too pricy, no breaking surface) and TB14s.
Open Pro just seems to be good value and tick all the boxes.

  • In what universe is the Open Pro at 390g? they're 430-440g approx, so hardly porky, rims weight isn't as important as you'd think, decent tyres, inner tube and correct pressure make the biggest difference (or tubeless).

If you're that anal about marginal gains, then the wider TB14 is the one to go for, Mavic's stick in the past while everyone is heading into the future.

  • Claimed weight on the mavix site is 390g..

I'm a big fan of OP's - reasonably light, strong, great braking surfaces, last ages, easy to source replacements. They aren't very fashionable but they are good, and reliable.

  • ^What he said.

The great thing about decent tyres, inner tubes and correct pressure is that you can still have them whatever rim you choose.

  • Always err on manufacturer's claim weight.

Except on narrower rims, they may not work that well (says 28mm), not sure what application you thought the TB14 is too wide for.

  • Cheers Ed
It's for the matching Roberts project, so track racing for one pair (on the track bike) and road training / occasional sportifs, fun runs, etc for the other (on the road bike).

  • In that case, the TB14 would sufficient, 23mm on track, 25mm on road.

  • Anyone got some previous gen open pro ceramics in 32h they wanna sell?

  • Not CDs

  • I have a pair in my attic, but not for sale.

    Sorry.

  • Anyone got some previous gen open pro ceramics in 32h they wanna sell?

I have been using a pair of these for about 12 years. Absolutely amazing, no rim wear, no grimy residue from pad and rim wear in the rain.
Great braking too, in the dry.
    In the wet?
Utter shite, they take yards to get the water off the rim, so there is no stopping at all till they dry and then bang, full on power.
They are now wearing through to the alloy beneath the coating, so they have been amazing value. But sometimes terrifying.
