  • It had a grey background because the forum doesn't deal with transparent layers in .png files. I couldn't be bothered to go back and find a different one.

Anyway; i've decided my original comment stands and they're both awful. You should have got a Steinhart...

  • Now that I've put together some moolah I'm getting excited about finally getting something nice. My shortlist is:

Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope (mesh bracelet, white/silver dial, no numerals) - I just really like this thing and it's not too excruciatingly expensive. It's nothing like the other watches I like so I wonder if I'll get tired of it. Thinking of exactly like this one:

IWC Mark XVI (steel bracelet, black dial) - plain but beautiful, a keeper. I really like how understated and neutral this is. Prefer the smaller, simpler XVI to the latest version (XVII). I know black dials are fairly standard but I'm not too keen for some reason.

IWC Pilot's Chronograph - a really robust and good looking do-it-all chronograph. Same issue re black dial plus is it too bitty? Playing too hard at looking like a flightdeck? The newest one is, as per the XVI, less nice than the previous version IMO. Depite a couple of painfully fussy reservations it's amazing.

And then there's a few others I quite like. The Rolex Submariner is great but a bit ubiquitous and a bit look-at-my-fucking-rolex. I also doubt the value of it more. And the Omega Speedie (much less money) and similarly obvious.

    Any thoughts?

  • 1st one is an absolute dream.

It's a special thing and haven't you wanted that for a while?

  • I have yes. I've put enough lolly aside to buy the Max Bill but my concern is that it's too specific and looks better under a suit (which I rarely wear) than worn casually. The main reason I had dismissed the IWCs, which I've liked for years, is that they're too expensive, but I've fortunately just inherited a bit extra with the instruction of getting something worthwhile.

  • I think if it were me I'd go for the Max Bill - but if you're concerned you won't wear it enough then go for something that you will.

I guess you want something that will go with a lot of outfits and that you want/feel comfortable wearing a lot. Or would it just be for best?

Also maybe think about holding value (though this is something I don't know much about..)

Any of them will look mint.

  • plus youll grow into a watch like the max bill

  • The intention is to wear it every day for as long as possible. I'd like to think the rest of my life but maybe that's unrealistic. And yeah, versatile is good. The IWC chronograph is maybe a bit too macho for me and the Max Bill too delicate (I'd love to have the Max Bill as a second watch if you know what I mean). The Mark XVI is the frontrunner I think.

  • That Mark XVI is a thing of beauty.

  • SP - what watches do you have already?

  • A Swatch and two Seiko 5s, only one of which works, Never spent more than £50 on a watch.

  • Buy with your heart and wear it all the time.
The quality will be remembered long after the price is forgotten.

  • IWC chrono all day long...

    This

fuck the haters. Love the watch. Wear what makes you happy. Look after it.

  • if you buy the 'sensible' choice, then you're just going to end up buying the one you actually wanted later anyway, but you'll have spent more money.

  • Nice. Prefer the omega....

^ This. Is the story of my life!

  • I'd get the max bill.

    ...or one of these.

Maybe the rose faced orion one. Tasty.

FWIW I'm not really trying to save money, it's all about the making the right choice. Truth is there are lots of watches I like but hardly any I'd want to own. And I'd prefer to have something from new or nearly new.

  • I'd get the max bill.

    Nomos... hmmmm

  • Those IWCs. Very nice.

  • For my money, I'd get one of the IWCs, but I don't like the Max Bill.

  • IWC's are nice, but for that sort of money I'd look at Bremont instead for an everyday watch.

  • My SKX009 on my wrist.

want to switch the strap out for a brown leather number but 31Trum isnt able to produce one for me (at this time)
Anyone know of an alternative? looking for a medium-dark tan, that will age well.
Toshi? straps i looked at, but were a little more than i wanted to spend (£95, ideally i want £50 or under)

  • @SP: Pisti's got an IWC Chrono, I believe. Try and find a Mark IV...

  • Now that I've put together some .......blah,pics,blah...........
And then there's a few others I quite like. The Rolex Submariner is great but a bit ubiquitous and a bit look-at-my-effing-rolex. .............

    Any thoughts?

if people know you for long enough they will realise that you are not the type of person they thought you should be because of the watch you are wearing. moreover you should wear the watch rather than the watch wearing you. its about substance or depth of character. when somebody walks into a room and the one of the first things you notice about them is their watch,,,,, maybe their watch is wearing them. does that make sense?
like the person of character that wears a jacket that has an interestingly patterned lining, that you only by chance get to glimpse. you dont see it because the owner takes it off and does an impression of a matador so that the world can see the lining.
buy the watch that you love the most and like BQ says wear it and love it.
submariners are beautiful. i also like stainless omega geneve from 1971
