a hefty salary
You’ll be saving a long, long time for a Rolex on my salary.

To (kind of) continuée with Hefties Porsche analogy- with a GT3, in the modern day or at least recently, if you buy from a dealer then unless you got the spec really wrong then you make money when you sell the car.
You are also expected to buy other cars to get on the list- I was told by a Rolex AD in Mayfair that if I bought an Explorer and a Milgaus then I could go on the list for a submariner.
I ended up paying overs for a 3 week old Submariner, as I’ve said before- but that cost me way less than buying other watches and didn’t have the wait.
I could go and buy that still-in-the-stickers GMT, feels similar to my Sub and my concern about it being polished is gone.
FWIW I don’t think it’s bad money- I’ve seen plenty of watches advertising at around that bracket that have been worn for a couple of years. New/unworn is worth a premium I’d say, but that of course does depend on where the market is going.
It’s the watch I’ve wanted for years, it’s here, I have the money. But - can I bring myself to go through with it?
It’s twice the list price. How much of that would I potentially get back at sale time?
Which is kind of a silly question in some ways as I don’t seem to sell my watches, but it’s part of the mental justification.

Basically if I buy a 992 GT3 at overs today, will I lose my shirt?
-

Totally understand the justification, but let’s face it, you’ve wanted it forever, you know it, we all know it. You can presumably afford it. Buy it.

I'm struggling a bit with other (incoming) costs, not the paying for them part, more the "you're fucking joking right? Right?!" part.
The place I quite like the look of in terms of location and size is $5,500 per month unfurnished for a 1,400 sq-ft apartment, and that's cheap - $8,000 per month for 1000 sq-ft is common in the more central areas. That's just such a huge amount of money that I'm balking at the idea right now, but I'm going to need somewhere to live, so...

But honestly - £41,000 GBP per year to rent an apartment. Mother of God.

Is this in SG? Or Boulder? Must’ve missed the move news. If it makes you feel any better, my 275 sq ft apartment in New York was $39,600 a year.

This is the one I'm looking at at the moment.
But I can't do anything whilst I wait for the visa application to be approved or rejected, so just looking around at this stage.

O no! The really flipping cool flat I want in paradise, that has a swimming pool and jacuzzi (and bomb shelter), is so expensive it’s making me think twice about spending roughly the average uk take home yearly pay on a watch that looks very marginally different to one I already have.
Sending hugs dude. Be strong etc.

I know right? It's a hard life.
TBH the bomb shelter is a plus in this uncertain world.

• #70487
(I decided not to buy the watch).

• #70488
Boo! Last year I bought a car I’ve always wanted but always felt was too expensive to be sensible. It’s flipping brilliant and I love it and I don’t miss the money even slightly. So I think you should buy the watch.
What’s the most money you could ever lose on it? About a month’s rent?

Someone else has pocketed the £50k profit, but the value will climb steadily

I’m not so sure.
Previous GT3s have always dropped before settling and then climbing slowly. A good 996 (the best GT3, since you asked) or 997 is now ~£80k, the 996 dipped below £40k before turning, the 997 below £50k.
The 992 has held up because we’ve changed how we buy cars because finance has been so cheap. But that’s ending.
991s are ~£90k.

I bought a car
Which one?

What’s the most money you could ever lose on it? About a month’s rent?
Good question. I put my name down at the AD nearby, which is probably futile but who knows - if they really ramp production then maybe it will work out.
The AD did say "and nudge nudge if you want to, you know, buy other watches once you're on the list that's a nudge nudge nudge a thing you can do"

I wonder what they message could have been?

As a committed vegan I’d amassed a surfeit of carbon offset credits I needed to use up, to be honest it was stressing me out a bit being so much better for the environment than everyone else. So I got a Testarossa.

• #70496
The AD had a strange tick?
-
• #70497
Money is all context right? If you're lucky enough to be earning enough right now then do it. Spend some one else's money while they are happy to give it you. At the worst you end up with the watch you have always wanted. Rent though.... Money into the ether!
( So easy from this side of the screen)
-
• #70498
All true, but I think I’ll make an effort to get this watch through official channels- being honest it’s a way of delaying things without risk, if it comes good then I’ve got (effectively) a “cheap” GMT. If it doesn’t then I’ve spent no money whilst in some way scratching the itch if that makes any sense?
-
• #70499
I get the impression that if I were to buy a bunch of watches that I didn’t really want “my” Rolex would appear rather sooner than it otherwise might do.
-
• #70500
I’m sure that’s right. That’s certainly what Porsche do. ‘Buy this ex demo Panamera Turbo no one wants and we’ll get you a GT3’.
Or had a death wish by calling us all "frivolous".
That frivolity put my daughter through university.
