I saw one of these at a very good price (£1850) in a pawn shop yesterday
http://secondtimeround.com/Rolex-Air-King-14010-Blue-350.html
No original paperwork though and not recently inspected/serviced apart from a quick check over at their central office to make sure it is genuine.

you could get it and sent it here
http://www.russelltalerman.com/
They will be able to service and replace parts for 300-400.

I dunno, no matter how beautiful a watch is I really can't bring myself to consider parting with £2k.

I am however still very tempted by a Junghans Force.
Or one of their Voyager ranges:

I prefer metal straps but their strap is well ugly.

I have an array of watches. I own one battery operated watch, a Swatch which I use for backpacking type holidays. I have a Suunto Core all black for skiing and general sporting-type activities and I have an Explorer, a Sea-Dweller and an Air King which I bought for the missus from the year of her birth ('82) from Rolex. I also have a Breitling Navitimer, a Tag Heuer Monaco, as well as a mid-sixties Seamaster and Favre Leuber both bought from "on here".
I have already lined up what I want next: an IWC Mark IV and then maybe a Portuguese. I do still fancy a Braun watch too...
My love for decent quality timepieces will never die. They are things of beauty which I lovingly admire. They all cost what they cost and the maintenance of these things is never cheap (apart from in the case of the Swatch - I must have got the one with the atomic battery, 'cos the fucker hasn't stopped in 6 years...), but if you own a piece or pieces of precision equipment then you will always have to spend money on the upkeep.

I think I completely agree with you on that.
Out of interest, are watches any cheaper out in your neck of the woods?
-
• #6283
Yes. As long as you're prepared to buy precious metals.
I've already started some bargaining on a rose gold Jaeger Le Coultre reverso. I've wanted one since I saw "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Pierce Brosnan.
There are deals to be had. I'll have a mooch about the dealers over here. Anything specific?
-
• #6284
If you wouldn't mind having a mooch I'd be very appreciative.
I'm a very big fan of the simple white faced Air King such as this one
EDIT: This is probably the best example of the kid of watch I like. Simple, functional and traditional. -

There's no need to get your knickers in a twist about automatic vs quartz debate.
Its all a bit of bravado.
I'm sure we all have quartz watches too.
-
• #6286
^^ If its cheaper in gold then all the better ;)

There's this on Dubizzle at the moment:
13000aed roughly equates to £2200, but they love a bit of bargaining over here so anything is possible.
I'm in the UK again in a couple of weeks so this potentially could be yours!

Quartz = doomed to failure through irrepairability.
Mechanical = almost always repairable. And cool as fuck. Less accurate, but usually not a problem.
Although if your quartz movement fails, replacing it is likely to cost much less than repairing an auto would. Don't try and justify wearing an auto on any grounds other than because they're cool and pretty, which ought to be enough.

Since purchasing the G-shock quartz thing with the radio adjustment from atomic clocks... I've basically abandoned my mechanical watch.
I can't recall when I bought the G-shock... Feb last year? So that's a year in which I've had no reason to touch the mechanical.

As proven by some of the fucking monstrosities on here
-
• #6291
Precisely. Or not if your choice happens to be automatic or mechanical.

Which is exactly why I love my Casio waveceptor so much.
That said, I don't own a car and I have a tiny penis so I feel I should compensate by having an expensive watch.

Very nice indeed, thanks duder.
Wouldn't pay a penny over £1900 for it though.
That aside, is there an export tax in Doooobay?
-

£1900? I'll have a word...
WTF is tax?
-
• #6296
18ct Gold Day Date
also got a Jaeger Le Coultre Reverso

Its that thing that HMRC knows that I pay regularly and in full.
B&D, theres an air king in a pawn shop on Deptford High Street for less than what they are asking.

^ I dig that a lot. What is it/how much is it?
Got bored of a black strap so hello lairy NATO
Fockin' LOVE this
Fair point.
As I said upthread, I have a very nice automatic gold Omega and a £150 Casio. I tend to prefer the Casio because it is more accurate, requires no maintenance, is solar powered, more shock proof etc etc.
The Omega requires servicing every few years which is not cheap. It is a dress watch, it is less practical.
In my opinion, they are both very good watches.
Horses for courses innit. This is why I don't get why people have a problem with quartz.
