I'm considering this for my first proper watch:
It's a Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope with a steel strap. Is this a sensible buy? By that I mean am I better off going for something a bit more normal/obvious? I love the look of it but it's quite... delicate. I'm thinking about longevity and, vaguely, resale value. They sell for about £1500 new.
Don't buy a watch based on resale values.

I wouldn't. Just thinking it through.

it's lovely, I read a review once about the non chrono version and the movement came out on top
of all the other ones, even the ones using the same base movement. So their QC or inhouse optimization
seams to be good. Also £1500 for and automatic chrono movement is very good, especially considering
its one of the prettiest watches in any price range.
I would go for the leather strap though (personal preference) -

Guys, it's fine, I take all of your comments even less seriously than you take mine, so we're cool. Though when I do get one none of you lot will be having a go on it.
I like this watch a lot, that is an immovable fact. But I wonder if in a few years I might prefer something like, I dunno, an Omega or a Rolex submariner or an IWC. The Junghans is a unique design and I am a fickle man, despite (as has been noted) my excellent taste.

If you turn into a fat fuck it will be a good match.

Are you intending on painting yourself orange and obtaining a trophy wife?
-
• #5468
I have a couple of Rolexes and have neither an orange hue to my pelt, nor a trophy wife.

I'm not sure I believe you

How dare you!

Sohi and Dammit, I'm not sure what you're getting at (Rolex's rep as being nouveau riche?). The Rolex submariner is a stone cold classic.

^This.
If you buy a gold one then maybe the argument stacks up.
-
• #5473
It may be a classic, but then braying city boy wannabee hoorah henrys can buy Porches as well.

That's the next car on my list...
Have you been following me?

You can only carry off a submariner these days after the City pollution if you are an actual Commander of a Nuclear Submarine.
Depends what you want to do with it. They have an acrylic face so will scratch quite easily.
Lovely looking things though; very nice as a dress only watch.
